as vitamin d is made from being exposed to ultraviolet b rays you don't need to be in the actual sun. the rays are all around you while ever you are outside. as you only need exposure from 5-60mins a week then everyone should be able to produce enough without suppliments.

people just don't get out enough. walk part of the way to work. walk the dog. go out for a ride.

oily fish and mushrooms are good though.

HELLO, i am a sub. I WAS CHATTING W/A DOM FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS. HE WANTED TO MEET. I SAID YES IF HE WOULD GIVE ME HIS NAME AND TOWN SO I COULD CHECK IF HE WERE REAL AND TO MAKE ME FEEL SAFE, YA KNOW. HIS RESPONSE WAS, THAT I SHOULD GO WITH MY INSTINCT, TAKE A LEAP OF FAITH AND WAS SICK OF ME ASKING. SO I DID NOT GO. MY GUT SAYS I AM RIGHT IN THIS DAY AND AGE. BUT AM I RIGHT? WHAT WOULD HE HAVE TO HIDE, AND FOR A POTENTENTAIL SUB TO MAKE FEEL SAFE? SO I WENT WITH MY INSTINECt AND IT SAID NO, DONT GO. PLEASE LET ME KNOW ME KNOW THe rules you go by re: safety. ty rose, WANTNEEDCRAVE...

wantneedcrave, firstly welcome.

however, why post a question in someone else's thread? especially one that is massively different on topic to yours.....

also all caps is classed as shouting.

start a thread somewhere else, but usually with stuff like this, use your common sence. seriously, in any other situation would you meet someone who was being pushy or would you just think no?

better safe than sorry.

wnc, what about his safety? Did you offer up your name and address? Nobody ever got abducted in a Starbuck's that I've ever heard of. The time to give personal info is after you know you want to pursue a personal relationship. If you meet for half an hour and never see him again, then there's no reason for him to give you that info or you to give it to him.

And needles was right. It's rude to interrupt another thread like this. Start your own.

Um, when it's close to freezing how is the sun going to get through all my layers of clothing? The only thing exposed today was my nose.

Is your nose very large? [;)]

The thing is: in some places the latitude is such that the angle of the sun makes it too low in the sky to be enough.

As for the original OP: RDAs for Vitamin D have recently changed.
I am vitamin D deficient and my Doctor had originally prescribed 50,000 units of vitamin D2 twice a week, yup, that is 100,000 units weekly; I take one pill of the 50,000 weekly plus 5,000 of D3 (which is better utilised by the body plus the calcium with D 3x/ day that she recommended daily and that gets me up to around 100,000 units/week.

Anubis74 -> RE: Best supplement form of Vitamin D (2/13/2012 11:41:08 AM)

Any form of vitamin D is fine (softgels, tablets, etc.). The recommended daily intake for an adult male living in climates with inadequate year round sunlight is 1000 Units/day. Your doctor may start you off with the 50,000 units every week for 4 weeks to catch you up if you are behind, but the latest studies question the safety of longer term use of high dose vitamin D and it's safety. For the one who posted originally, everyone in New England is considered vitamin D deficient due to the lack of sunny days per year. You'd have to spend 2 hours in the sun every day that it is sunny (about 165 days in the New England area) to get enough vitamin D converted in your skin. And of course if you are darker, brown/black, it's almost double that time.

If You Take Oral Vitamin D You MUST Avoid Making This Serious Mistake

Did you know there are two types of vitamin D, and they are NOT interchangeable?

In fact, taking the wrong one could do you more harm than good...

Drisdol is a synthetic form of vitamin D2—made by irradiating fungus and plant matter—and is the form of vitamin D typically prescribed by doctors.

This is not the type produced by your body in response to sun or safe tanning bed exposure, which is vitamin D3.

A recent meta-analysis by the Cochrane Database looked at mortality rates for people who supplemented their diets with D2 versus those who did so with D3, the form naturally produced by your body, highlighting the significant differences between the two.

The analysis of 50 randomized controlled trials, which included a total of 94,000 participants, showed:

* A six percent relative risk reduction among those who used vitamin D3, but
* A two percent relative risk increase among those who used D2

...Supplemental vitamin D comes in two forms:

1. Ergocalciferol (vitamin D2)
2. Cholecalciferol (vitamin D3)

... * According to the latest research, D3 is approximately 87 percent more potentiii in raising and maintaining vitamin D concentrations and produces 2- to 3-fold greater storage of vitamin D than does D2.
* Regardless of which form you use, your body must convert it into a more active form, and vitamin D3 is converted 500 percent faster than vitamin D2.
* Vitamin D2 also has a shorter shelf life, and its metabolites bind poorly with proteins, further hampering its effectiveness.

What about Dietary Sources? Animal-Based versus Plant-Based Vitamin D

Aside from taking an oral vitamin D supplement, you can also obtain small amounts of vitamin D from your diet. Here too, it's important to realize that not all food sources provide the same kind of vitamin D. Plant sources provide you with D2. The more beneficial D3 can only be had through animal-based sources such as:

* Fish, such as salmon, mackerel, tuna and sardines
* Egg yolk
* Raw milk

Dairy processors producing pasteurized milk have also been fortifying milk with vitamin D since 1933. Today, about 98 percent of the milk supply in the U.S. is fortified with approximately 400 International Units (IU) of vitamin D per quart. While dairies used to fortify their milk with vitamin D2, most have now switched over to D3. But, if you still drink pasteurized milk (which I don't recommend), check the label to see which form of vitamin D has been added. (If you drink raw milk, then you're getting the naturally-occurring vitamin D in the milk fat.)

Two notes:

1. the Mercola article is a bit biased as he also sells tanning beds.
2. apparently there IS a vegetarian source of D3 - thanks to DeviantlyD for sending me this link: http://www.vitashine-d3.com/
