Seeing as dental dams are somewhat rare around where I live, and seem to be rarely used in comparison to condoms, I'm curious as to how many people here have experience with them? For anyone that doesn't know what they are, a dental dam is a thin foil of rubber or other barrier material that can be placed over the body for oral sex, rimming and so forth. If one is not available, it is possible to improvise them by cutting the head off a condom, then slicing it lengthwise and rolling it out. Dedicated dental dam products are preferrable, though, and come in as much variety as condoms do, including flavored versions. It's probably the only way you'll ever rim someone and have it taste like strawberry. There's been more campaigning around it here lately, and apparently they're even handing them out at Fuckshop, a public service project by the department of health, essentially a workshop on assplay and anal sex with seperate courses for gay, straight and lesbian people. It's an extension of the more theoretically oriented education on the subject schools provide. For once, my tax dollars are saving me time, heh. This is the first I've seen of dental dams being pushed to the general public here. Most people I know weren't aware such a product existed until I told them, and there seems to be a great deal of ignorance about the potential for STDs to spread via oral sex. The campaign was launched after the LGBT health department discovered that lesbians here were generally unaware of the product and of the fact that they, too, are susceptible to STDs. So, now I'm curious about other people's experiences with dental dams, as well as comparing notes on how well known this product and the risks it mitigates are around the globe. I'll admit to having been lax about this in the past, despite knowledge of the product, but fortunately without losing the lottery. Anyone care to share?
