Come ON, peon.

He said "Dead ON" That means absolutely correct. I understand your vernacular may be a bit different but to cherrypick and misquote a post like that to distort and discredit is something I only expect down in P&R.

These are some of the reasons that moderators do not post as moderators under their regular nicks.

Let's not forget another point:

If a mod wants to moderate, s/he needs to put on the mod hat.

When one can moderate under the same nick as one is posting under, it becomes possible to moderate without an enforced mindfulness about the position. Having to log out and back in, or to switch browsers or whatever, prevents mixing roles to a much larger degree than when it's "at your fingertips" (well... still fingertips, but they have to wiggle somewhat to do anything... lol).

This is important, in my experience.

ETA: Enjoy the next hundred, too. [:D]

Health,
al-Aswad.

Bloody hell, HW. Vernacular might vary a bit as one flies across the pond, but clearly nowhere near so much as sense of humour!

My most profound apologies to MM, LP and VAA for any offence.

. . . Aaaaand belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY to you, Your VAAness!

........Edit: By the way, I turned 100 today but can't update my age......:)

You're looking good for 100.  Sorry you can't update your age.  Maybe I can write a software addon that will let CollarMe go to 100 in the age.  If after using the addon, you suddenly discover CollarMe has a few new profile categories like midgets, amputees, nuns and bestiality, don't say I didn't warn you.

I'm happy with the Mods we have.  The threads that get totally out of control, the vindictiveness sometimes shown by posters, TOS violations, the list goes on.  Volunteering here while living an independent life can't be easy and I tip my hat (okay, I can't find my fedora, but dayum I look good in it [;)]) to those who agree to do such a thankless job and show such grace.

WinsomeDefiance -> RE: Why moderator nicks? (1/15/2012 11:03:28 PM)

Burn out.  That would be the number one reason that I can think of to desire anonymity.  I know from experience, that once a group of people know you are a moderator or administrator - the work never ends.  There will always be people wanting to ask a question, or vent, or offer advice or need help.  One of my passions was collaborative writing.  I ran a collaborative writing group/gaming site.  Once it became known that I wasn't just another writer/user, my ability to come online and enjoy the game or creative process became nearly impossible.  The job never ended.  What had been a passion, became an endless, thankless cycle of work and headaches.  Attitudes of people not happy, spilled over into the creative process and held up projects and story lines.  It was ridiculous how individuals on my site, seemed to think they were owed and entitled to my every available minute.  Maybe the moderators want their own free time, to just be a user and enjoy themselves.  Volunteering to help out doesn't mean they surrendered the right to come here and enjoy the same anonymity any other user on the site enjoys.

As far as I know, the moderators here are all people who participate in the forums.  I don't know why other people come here to read the message board and participate, but I do it because I enjoy the forums - I'm relatively confident the moderators didn't volunteer to help out a site they didn't enjoy and want to support (who would do that?)  Alpha has even said it herself, she no longer posts under her user name.  I'm sure she misses it, and quite frankly I don't know how she isn't burnt out by now.

So, yeah.  I can think of at least one good reason (aside from what has already been mentioned) as to why moderators have separate and anonymous nicks.  No one should have to give up their passion, entertainment or escape from reality, just because they volunteered to help out the site they enjoy.
