for a college student?

http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11711336&whse=BC&Ne=5000127

I might get one for myself as well. I've had my Samsung lappie for a couple of years now and I LOVE it! (being red doesn't hurt, either)

Looks good. Check tigerdirect.com and www.newegg.com for comparable (but cheaper!) ones.

xssve -> RE: What Do You Think Of This Laptop.. (2/2/2012 9:51:43 AM)

Looks fully loaded, though when shopping for a student model I tend to look at battery life before bells and whistles, don't know how this one compares.

I bought a Galaxy Tab 10.1 for myself at Christmas, but I hate it. Android is designed around social media, which I don't do, and apparently Android itself is the target of several patent infringement lawsuits by microshaft, which means apps for it might be hard to find, I'll probably end up giving to my son.

I really wanted a reader I could check my email on and surf the web with, without having to be at my desk (I hate laptop keyboards too), and it does do that, I just don't like the interface, I can't just close things up.

I've heard it's really slow as well, is that true?

I don't know, I've hardly used it yet.

I always look at editorial reviews on CNET and customer reviews on Amazon.

ETA - the reviews on your link looked good.

LaTigresse -> RE: What Do You Think Of This Laptop.. (2/2/2012 11:45:18 AM)

It wouldn't work for me cuz I've got to have lots of juice for my photo stuff, but I don't see why it would be bad.

Liberal arts, fine art or engineering? Different majors have different requirements.

Advertising and Journalism.

Blushes,  As far as the students needs I would have to
look in more detail.

For a laptop that is being used in your home there is something
else you may wish to consider.  I just helped someone to get his
new laptop up and running.  One of the things I found out about it
was that it would work with one of these devices.

If you have the right combination of chip AND Graphics Card, then it will
work with one of these.  What it does is make your big screen TV a 1080
second monitor for your laptop.  You can even send one stream to the TV
while you do something else on the laptop monitor.  Stream a video to the
TV while you mind your business on the laptop monitor.  All wireless.

But it only works with laptops with the right Intel chip and graphics chip.
Something to consider.

Yanno, I've been saying for YEARS that someday our tvs would also be our computers. (that we would be able to see on our tvs what is on our computers, and interact in that way) SO MANY people irl laughed at me. But I did know it was only a matter of time.
He still needs a lappie though, to take to class with him.

shallowdeep -> RE: What Do You Think Of This Laptop.. (2/3/2012 2:35:55 AM)

Any idea how the student in question might want to use it? For a quad-core i7, it looks like it's probably a decent price, but how well it would work for a student depends some on the intended use.

The processor is a fairly high-end one with four cores; two cores could be more cost effective – and still offer similar, or even better, performance for some types of use. Not everything is multithreaded, and even for workloads that are, there can be other factors to consider. Depending on the use, something like a faster 7200 RPM drive might be of more value.

Do they intend to carry the machine around with them all the time? How far do they have to walk around campus each day? While probably manageable, it's definitely not the most portable model; it's possible a student would prefer something smaller and lighter. It looks like this particular configuration might be unique to Costco, but a quick search for reviews of what seems to be the same chassis turned up at least one with concerns about the build quality. Especially if it's going to be crammed in a backpack frequently, I'd probably want to look at one in person before purchasing.

Do they play graphically intensive games or do any other demanding 3D work? The graphics on the computer are mediocre, just the integrated Intel part. For general use and even some casual gaming it's acceptable, but there are definitely situations it could be a disappointment. Also, software that can offload some computing tasks from the CPU to the GPU is becoming increasingly common. Trading down the CPU for a better discrete GPU could make sense for some people.

The screen resolution is on the low end for a 15.6" display. You can find the same resolution in most smaller 13.3" notebooks, which have the advantage of being more portable. I'd probably personally want something with higher resolution, but it's less of an issue if it will frequently be hooked up to an external monitor.

We're not looking for a gaming computer. Just something that he can use to do his schoolwork, send email, stuff like that.
I appreciate everyone's input!
I have to say that I have been extremely impressed with Samsung's reliability, as had a family member who owns a computer repair place.
I haven't made up my mind yet though.

I love all these ppl that make a simple purchase much more complicated than it truly is. Any new computer for personal use will be more than adequate whether you spend 300 or 1,500 bucks. The more expensive one will cost more and that is pretty much the only advantage. The point being you don't need 100 gig of ram and a million zillion gig hard drive.

I have yet to see a laptop that does NOT support 2 monitors it has nothing to do with the card and chip. The OS is what controls the monitors If the OS is win XP or newer you can use 2 monitors.

I love people who have strong opinions without thinking.  Now, go back and reread everything
and try to hold these thoughts while you do it.

Blushes said she was thinking of one for herself as well.
so my first paragraph said I would have to look more closely at the student's needs.

As to any computer running 2 monitors that is true.  That is NOT THE SAME as running
a 40-50 inch in 1080 from across the room using no wires.  Here is the Intel page about it.
Intel Wireless Display (WiDi)

Option 1, all those designers, engineers and marketing people wasting their time at
Intel, Belkin, Netgear, and D-Link for nothing.  Because they didn't know what you know.
Option 2, you need to learn to read more carefully and to think.

Hard drive is small...
HD3000 graphics is rather minimal.

This would make a good homework and word processing computer but I'd consider either upgrading the hard drive or getting a usb drive to augment the storage. It doesn't have eSata socket for fastest external hard drive speed but it does have USB 3.0 which is almost as fast. For gaming, the graphics card might be a little frustrating but if this is for a serious student, a good price point.

Just an opinion,
Stefan

GreedyTop -> RE: What Do You Think Of This Laptop.. (2/4/2012 7:16:52 AM)

Chrissy, I don't know much about computers, but if advertising is one of the majors, I'm assuming there will be a lot of graphics involved, so I would think that a better than decent grpahics card would be important. Also, consideration for external add-ons like a wacom tablet type gizmo?

750 GB hard drive on a laptop "small"?!

Or did you just misread the size?

Firm

MercTech -> RE: What Do You Think Of This Laptop.. (2/4/2012 11:14:02 PM)

750gb when you can get a terabyte drive for $150... yeah.
