kalikshama -> New Komen petitions - for Handel to be fired and to keep Komen from weaseling out of its promises (2/6/2012 8:44:17 AM)

"If we just say it's about investigations, we can defund Planned Parenthood and no one can blame us for being political."1

That's what Komen for the Cure's Vice President of Public Policy, Karen Handel told staff when she led the organization to defund Planned Parenthood's grants--a decision that has been at least temporarily reversed as of Friday.

But Handel is still the top policy-maker for the organization, and according to reports isn't sorry about the fallout caused by her decision--in fact, according to sources she fought the reversal every step of the way.2 Handel previously ran for Governor of Georgia on a platform of defunding Planned Parenthood.

Right now, Komen is working to rebuild trust with the public. They need to know that our faith in the organization will not be restored until Handel is gone.

Can you sign the petition telling Komen's leadership that Karen Handel must be removed? The pressure is rising from all over for Handel to resign, and if enough of us speak out now while the media spotlight is still on, we can make sure Komen does the right thing for its mission and for women's health by asking her to resign.

Tell Komen for the Cure: Karen Handel has to go!

Explosive new reports show that Karen Handel, Komen for the Cure’s Senior Vice President of Policy was the architect of the push to defund Planned Parenthood. Even more disturbing is that she crafted the “investigations” policy just for the purpose of cutting off Planned Parenthood. Handel has shown that she's willing to put politics ahead of women's lives and her continued presence on Komen’s leadership team threatens to tarnish all of their good work on behalf of breast cancer awareness.

Now pressure for Handel to resign is mounting. Will you join us in letting Komen know that Handel needs to go?

Our message to Komen's CEO, Nancy Brinker:

“Karen Handel has proven that she’s willing to play politics with women's lives and her presence at Komen for the Cure endangers all of the good work the organization does on behalf of breast cancer awareness. Karen Handel must be removed for her role in the decision to defund Planned Parenthood.”

kalikshama, that ain't gonna fix it.  Handel's views were well known at Komen when she was hired.  Brinker knew exactly what she was getting into.

Sounds to me like Brinker hired Handel to do exactly what she did, and is now throwing her under the bus and pretending she acted on her own.  I'd love to see BOTH of them go.

The good news is that Susan G. Komen for the Cure announced that they are reversing their decision to ban grants to organizations under politically-motivated investigation.1 This shows the power we have to create change—Komen backed down quickly because hundreds of thousands of people immediately stood up for Planned Parenthood, with petitions and phone calls, and on Twitter, Facebook, and blogs.2

The bad news is that it's not yet clear that they will continue funding Planned Parenthood beyond this year. In fact, a Komen board member said yesterday that Komen refuses to commit to funding breast screenings and mammogram referrals at Planned Parenthood in future grant cycles.3 And the anti-choice, anti-gay vice president they recently hired, Karen Handel—whom many believe drove the push to stop funding Planned Parenthood—is still a top organizational leader.4

We can't let Komen sweep their problems under the rug with this announcement. Can you help get the word out to all your friends and family to sign this petition to make sure the Komen foundation commits to continued funding for Planned Parenthood?

Susan G. Komen for the Cure: Put Women's Lives Before Politics

Susan G. Komen for the Cure announced that it is reversing its decision to ban grants to organizations under politically motivated investigation. The bad news is that it's not clear that it will continue funding Planned Parenthood.

Planned Parenthood health centers are often the main source of health care for women in underserved communities, and they provide 830,000 breast exams every year. Without Komen's funding, up to 170,000 women could be unable to get the screenings and early detection of breast cancer that save lives.

Without a public commitment to funding breast health care through Planned Parenthood, Komen could find a new excuse to eliminate funding, as it already tried to do. And Komen's vice president of public policy, Karen Handel, is an outspoken opponent of funding for Planned Parenthood. To be sure that Komen keeps politics out of women's health, it must commit to funding breast health grants through Planned Parenthood, and fire Karen Handel.

Tell Susan G. Komen for the Cure to commit to funding ongoing breast health services through Planned Parenthood.

I wonder how much that factored into the reversal - to me that really exposed the political motives.

Nope.

In fact I think that it is highly inappropriate for people to be calling for her resignation or firing.

Like it or not, Planned Parenthood is a political landmine. Any decision was going to piss off roughly 50% of the population.

De-fund? Hell, it only became embarrassing for the GOP to know their little right-wing cradle was full of OUTED pederasts. It never bothered them a bit when it stayed in the locker room

I disagree that it's in anyway inappropriate to dismiss an executive member of an NGO for introducing politics into

It's NO WHERE NEAR 50% or the de-funding would have stood.

But if you think it is, you're certainly entitled to throw something together and override our exercise of democracy

I think it will piss off some of the population but nowhere near 50%.

The left of center people will not get pissed off by funding PP. That's 50% right there.

Moderates will not be pissed off by funding PP. There's another 15-20% which leaves the Right.

Right side males will to a large extent but not totally agree with defunding PP but Right wing females will not be unanimous. My mother, for example, calls Rush a moderate. When the news came that PP was being defunded, there was steam coming out her ears. She was PISSED. She was an RN for about 30 years and has lost a lot of friends and family to cancer so that might have something to do with it. I actually believe that less than a third of the country feels like defunding PP is a good thing. That means over 2/3 think defunding is a bad idea.

I'm trying to find a poll for support of Planned Parenthood -Komen, -funding, but not having any luck and must push away from the computer.

I did find that in regards to funding:

At the other extreme, 57% of Americans oppose laws prohibiting health clinics that provide abortion services from receiving any federal funds -- a policy akin to the recent efforts in Congress and some states to defund Planned Parenthood.

I would think support for Planned Parenthood would be even higher when the issue of government funding is removed.

And if more people understood that federal dollars do not support abortion services and that this only comprises 3% of PP's services:

Donors reacting to the Susan G. Komen Foundation’s decision to cut off funding to Planned Parenthood contributed $650,000 in 24 hours, nearly enough to replace last year’s Komen funding, Planned Parenthood executives said Wednesday.

The organization had raised more than $400,000 from more than 6,000 online donors as of Wednesday afternoon, compared with the 100 to 200 donations it receives on an average day, said Tait Sye, a spokesman for the Planned Parenthood Federation of America. He said donations were still coming in.

The group also launched a Breast Health Emergency Fund to ensure funding to affiliates that will lose their Komen grants. That fund received a $250,000 gift from the family foundation of Dallas philanthropist Lee Fikes and his wife, Amy.

Planned Parenthood said the fund cutoff is the result of Komen bowing to pressure from anti-abortion activists. Komen also hired a vice president last year, Karen Handel, who had previously advocated for the group’s defunding in her run for Georgia governor.

They knew Handel's position when they hired her. While I agree she should not be in that position for exactly that reason, no one could convince me that isnt the reason why she was hired to begin with.

Brinker politicized things when she hired Handel.
It is very difficult to believe this wasn't deliberate.
I don't think the majority of Americans have a problem
with Planned Parenthood. I think most people who
have contributed to Brinker's organization over the
years want to see as many women as possible benefit
from it's aims. It's presumed aims.

Brinker has long fancied herself a major player in the GOP. She got the ambassadorship by raising a lot of money for W. It was inevitable that the circles she wants to walk in would demand the charity move to the right. Now it has.

Hopefully we can now concentrate on prevention, the Komen foundation has been a major opponent of research into environmental causes of breast cancer, and spend less effort on fund raising for the sake of fund raising.

Welcome to Cancerland

by Barbara Ehrenreich
Harper's Magazine, November 2001

...Worse, by ignoring or underemphasizing the vexing issue of environmental causes, the breast cancer cult turns women into dupes of what could be called the Cancer Industrial Complex: the multinational corporate enterprise that with the one hand doles out carcinogens and disease and, with the other, offers expensive, semi-toxic pharmaceutical treatments.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month, for example, is sponsored by AstraZeneca (the manufacturer of tamoxifen), which, until a corporate reorganization in 2000, was a leading producer of pesticides, including acetochlor, classified by the EPA as a "probable human carcinogen." This particularly nasty conjuncture of interests led the environmentally oriented Cancer Prevention Coalition (CPC) to condemn Breast Cancer Awareness Month as "a public relations invention by a major polluter which puts women in the position of being unwitting allies of the very people who make them sick."

Although AstraZeneca no longer manufactures pesticides, CPC has continued to criticize the breast-cancer crusade -- and the American Cancer Society -- for its unquestioning faith in screening mammograms and careful avoidance of environmental issues.

In a June 12, 2001, press release, CPC chairman Samuel S. Epstein, M.D., and the well-known physician activist Quentin Young castigated the American Cancer Society for its "longstanding track record of indifference and even hostility to cancer prevention . . . Recent examples include issuing a joint statement with the Chlorine Institute justifying the continued global use of persistent organochlorine pesticides, and also supporting the industry in trivializing dietary pesticide residues as avoidable risks of childhood cancer. ACS policies are further exemplified by allocating under 0.1 percent of its $700 million annual budget to environmental and occupational causes of cancer."

In the harshest judgment, the breast-cancer cult serves as an accomplice in global poisoning -- normalizing cancer, prettying it up, even presenting it, perversely, as a positive and enviable experience.

...No, this is not my sisterhood. For me at least, breast cancer will never be a source of identity or pride. As my dying correspondent Gerri wrote: "IT IS NOT O.K.!" What it is, along with cancer generally or any slow and painful way of dying, is an abomination, and, to the extent that it's manmade, also a crime.

This is the one great truth that I bring out of the breast-cancer experience, which did not, I can now report, make me prettier or stronger, more feminine or spiritual -- only more deeply angry.

What sustained me through the "treatments" is a purifying rage, a resolve, framed in the sleepless nights of chemotherapy, to see the last polluter, along with, say, the last smug health insurance operative, strangled with the last pink ribbon. Cancer or no cancer, I will not live that long of course.

But I know this much right now for sure: I will not go into that last good night with a teddy bear tucked under my arm.
