(Reuters) - Millions of healthy people - including shy or defiant children, grieving relatives and people with fetishes - may be wrongly labeled mentally ill by a new international diagnostic manual, specialists said on Thursday.

In a damning analysis of an upcoming revision of the influential Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), psychologists, psychiatrists and other experts said new categories of mental illness identified in the book were at best "silly" and at worst "worrying and dangerous."

The men in white coats are coming to take me away... [;)]

Wouldn't it be great to get some disability money for your fetishes ?

kitkat105 -> RE: Shyness could be declared a mental illness (2/9/2012 8:46:51 PM)

Melancholy, madness, shyness, insanity, lunacy, awkward, epilepsy, dyslexia, being deaf, etc... have all been forms of mental illness before they had names for disorders.

FrostedFlake -> RE: Shyness could be declared a mental illness (2/9/2012 8:56:37 PM)

Psychiatry is that portion of the medical community that doesn't really care what happens to the patient.

It's about money more than about anything else.

When the psychiatrists start to say they are going too far, they are.

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Shyness could be declared a mental illness (2/9/2012 9:09:33 PM)

When they start saying they're goig too far, they already did some time ago.
Wow, such silliness. Excuse me if I don't get in line for anti-shyness pills.

Maybe the purchase of "supplies" could be tax-deductible.

Honestly, things like this scare me. Humans feel, and have quirks and eccentricities. What a way to strip people of the ability to be human. Yes, it ticks me off a that it seems drug companies will profit. What upsets me more, though, is to think that people may really think something is wrong with them, which in itself could cause more distress that the "symptom" being diagnosed.

Ugh. It's sickening. The whole thing.

Well walking into a store with a hobble skirt, or some such, on would be rather tricky if you were forced to park alll the way in the back...so ya handicapped parking would be good heh.

She's sweet and spot on a lot of the time.
The pharmaceutical industry are drugdealers plain and simple(dont forget the exemption to the rule). They push pills like criminals giving bonusses to your local docter.
In the seventies they pushed speed/ amphetemines now its prozac and ritalin.
They even made up a new disorder for it ADHD.
For the people lovin horrormovies.
Just go have a look outside your window. Lots of zombies walkin round.

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Shyness could be declared a mental illness (2/10/2012 4:43:38 AM)

Thanks Mr. Bukani. =p

They are certainly that. They basically bribe doctors to carry and use their products. I was prescribed something I didn't need by a doctor with the medicine name on a wall clock, clip board, paper pads, mouse pad -- the works. If he had all of that stuff, I'm sure they'd taken him out to dinner and given him plenty of other stuff. That medicine made me flip COMPLETELY out, and when I refused to keep taking it, he wanted to basically imprison me in a hospital room. Needless to say, I never went back.

Rather than really focus on prevention and helping people become really healthy, it's all about this goony insta-fix magic pill culture -- Sure I can sit on my ass all day and eat 5 hamburgers at a time, there's a pill for that. Pfft.

And for people who really do need the medicines they're on, they'll get suspicious and send you off to a clinic where they snatch all your medicine away from you, causing your death -- and they just sit back and say "I THOUGHT I was doing what was in his best interests."

Yeah, suffice it to say, I have very, very VERY little faith in the American medical system.

Exidor -> RE: Shyness could be declared a mental illness (2/10/2012 5:56:03 AM)

[quote I have very, very VERY little faith in the American medical system.[/quote]

That's because it's a *system,* driven by drug companies, HMOs, and malpractice insurers. I still have a real doctor; a general practitioner MD. But he's going to retire in a few years, and I'll have to find another in the area that's still taking new patients. Almost all the doctors in the area are Primary Care Physicians now; their only purpose in the "system" is to collect a fee for your office visit, then send you off to the next doctor in the referral-go-round. At each step everyone gets a cut, and the testing labs get more business.

Not every sore throat or broken toe requires a referral to an ENT clinic or orthopedic surgeon, but that's how the system is shaping up. Pretty soon there will be so many referrals that you'll either be healed or dead before you finally get an appointment with someone who might actually help you...

Excuse me if I don't get in line for that either. [:'(] hahaha

Now girly/fruity junk like Bacardi Raz or something, sure sure. =p And well... I do have a soft spot for JD & coke.

shylilbear -> RE: Shyness could be declared a mental illness (2/10/2012 12:36:04 PM)

And my list of mental illness just got longer. I was planning on eliminating one or two in the very near future, not adding more lol.

shylilbear -> RE: Shyness could be declared a mental illness (2/10/2012 12:38:26 PM)

Although, if there was a pill to eliminate shyness, i just might have to try it. It would be so wonderful to be able to show people who I really am, instead of be so incredibly shy in public settings that i'm not much more than a mouse in a corner.

kdsub -> RE: Shyness could be declared a mental illness (2/10/2012 5:30:13 PM)

Just as a side note...I believe any character trait that, you cannot control, and adversely affects your life is truly a mental illness. Calling something a mental illness, like shyness that affects your life, is a sane and logical fact... The bull crap comes from people that think they have the ability to cure you.

My opinion, which is not based on knowledge but just with personal experience, is that there is little long-term success at treating people with mental illnesses. I think most just learn over time how to cope on their own.

People with extremes of mental illness usually end up drugged or committed or both against their will...not cured.

Butch

DesFIP -> RE: Shyness could be declared a mental illness (2/10/2012 8:27:33 PM)

An old friend's daughter suffers from crippling social phobia. That's shyness.
My oldest, who has multiple mood disorders, suffered from oppositional defiance if her severe anxiety disorder wasn't sufficiently controlled.

Yes, a hundred years ago there was just one label - crazy. And just one course of action - locking people up without treatment to be abused for the rest of their life.

As far as not believing that gambling can be an addiction that destroys lives, or addiction to porn can destroy marriages - where have you folks been all your life?

Nobody I know is going to declare someone who just buried their parent or child as mentally ill because they're grieving. But three years later, if they haven't moved on at all, then yes. They need help. And I speak as someone who was stuck in the grief cycle after my mother died and needed help in progressing.

Oh, as far as the therapists and psychiatrists and neurologists I have been fortunate enough to turn to? Tops in their field in the nation.

Considering that fifty years ago homosexuality was declared a mental illness as well as a crime. I can't wait for the revisions to the DSM to come out.

I suppose that could be said about everyone, in one form or another. Even people who have mental lapses, like dialing the wrong number or forgetting something at the store, could be considered mentally ill. This could even include people who misspell words and use poor grammar. [;)]

Seriously, though, where do you draw the line?

I agree, although I think there should have to be some sort of clear and present danger in order to justify locking someone up in an institution.
