Okay some animals are often associated with negative terms. Like pigs are often associated with being filthy, wolves are considered dangerous and predatory lone monsters, and rats are associated with weak and pathetic cowards.

However...
Pigs actually keep themselves well clean and only get covered in mud when they are hot(the mud cools them down on hot days)

Wolves hunt in packs and mate for life, a wolf also howls at the moon to signal it's pack and when the mate dies they do grieve as do most other animals.

Rats can claw through solid steel(pretty scary when you think about it).

So why are animals often associated with negative terms?

To relate to our own bad sides.
Like the saying he speaks with a double tongue.
When a wolf becomes a lone wolf it may loose its social skills and turn to what we deem as bad, while it might be survival to him.
I guess we like to use animal totems for a lot of reasons, maybe because we think humans are not in touch with nature any more.
But also to define ourselves or others.
Like he is strong like a bear
or a sly fox
etc.
It's cultural defined a little as well, we see rats as bad cause we are scared of them. Logically for the west, since rats carried deseases like the plague.
The chinese see the rat as smart/intelligent.
I dont know if you can state its often negative, there is a lot of positive reference as well.

Pigs are omnivores; they'll eat anything, and they tend to be more parasite ridden than say cows and horses (mainly when raised poorly).

Wolves are not known as lone animals. "Lone wolf" refers specifically to loner wolves and people who are comparable to them. It does not refer to wolves in general.

Rats tend to run from humans and are often around seen around them and so often seen running from humans.

These ideas were formed early in human history. Rats like to be around people and they also like to eat a lot of the things we like. They'll steal food, tear up clothing, etc. They're also very smart and mischievous, and damaged property. So they were characterized as nuisances, saboteurs, etc. And like Soyokaze said, they are more likely to run than fight.

Wolves are fearsome, and their eyes glow at night - people probably thought they were demonic. Plus they would steal livestock - and probably killed people.
A lone wolf is a wolf with no ties, no society - even though early people feared wolves, they still recognize their tendency to form social units, and how important those social units are - they're like us in that regard. So a lone wolf is one with no more attachmets, someone out for himself, a mercenary.

And yeah - pigs eat anything. A man round the bend back home was partially eaten by his hogs after he fell into their pen after a heart attack. People have always been unnerved by things that will eat us.
And eating anything at all? That translated to "gross."

that`s an easy one, & its simple,
"(Most) People do remember the bad side, & forget the good side".

PS: not only animals are often associated with negative terms.
let me ask you something & you tell me what first thing came up to your mind:
1- Germans.
2- Russians.
3- Arabs (or Muslems).
4- Japanese.
5- Communists.
