By contrast, in the USA, the rate is 7.5% and abortion is chosen in 1 of 3 cases.

Nearly half of pregnancies among American women are unintended, and about four in 10 of these are terminated by abortion.

Twenty-two percent of all pregnancies (excluding miscarriages) end in abortion.

http://www.guttmacher.org/pubs/fb_induced_abortion.html

Im sorta picky on these kinds of facts.

I thought he was saying the teenage pregnancy rate in the US was 7.5% and that 1/3 teenage pregnancies resulted in an abortion? Granted, you would expect the abortion rate to be higher in teens, except in states with parental consent laws...oh wait...

Ok, thanks.

Apparently, we're doing better than I thought.

It wasn't very important to me, so I used the more conservative figures on WP.

Health,

Sex is far less taboo here, it seems.

To illustrate the difference in culture:

That would be a fairly accurate generalization of the continent, actually.

For the audience in this thread, here is an example to partially illustrate the difference, from a German TV series broadcast to the general public, Türkisch für Anfänger (Turkish for Beginners). Fast forward to ~ 2:10, the 'illustrative scene' occurring at ~ 2:28:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfgoBgGj6hM

Of course it's not about sex, but the example provides a barometer of mores/value system  concerning the body in general, though that would usually be an indicator about sexual mores too. If you're going to show a naked female bottom on national TV, make sure it's mom's bottom as she is going to the shower. It is a family show, after all.

Tchüss!

Nice scene! I think I saw sideboob too.
My impression is that the US thinks boobs and bush will turn people into mindless rapists, but that the Saw movies, for example, have no effect on society, while Europe has the opposite view. Note that I was referring to female bush, not the president, who did turn people mindless...
I tend to figure that anything we can come up with in hollywood or wherever will pale next to what people saw in reality during the dark ages, and that people are pretty tough mentally, but there is such a thing as PCOS and some folks get nightmares from movies. Not sure if anyone ever got a nightmare from porn though...

Aber natürlich.

Germany is probably closer than most, too. From the start of the globalization phase here, Germany and the UK were the two main inputs into our culture, and a lot of institutions were closely modelled after those two, including the public broadcasting. Even TV series (back before we produced our own to any notable extent) were originally more commonly imported from the UK and Germany than from the US, with children's shows also imported from France.

It's somewhat tragic that most of my German comprehension is from Derrick and Counterstrike chat.

Health,
al-Aswad.

Whatever else I might get out of reading Nietsche, after agreeing with this or disagreeing with that in all his ranting, I will always be grateful to him for coming up with the description "those despisers of the body" in reference to people of the Victorian and overly prude mindset and their nefarious doings.

You would find that Nietzsche is Pietzsche.

Transcend and perish.

Man is only truely lost when he gives up all hope (thats Kant, I think)

Not really, SB - at least, not in the case of the UK.

Here, it became a Sunday afternoon custom to turn on the telly and see any amount of people being shot or blown up in a war film. But, the merest hint of sex . . . Oh no. Complaints would pour in to the BBC about the inappropriateness of showing sex on a Sunday. Even as a young kid I thought that was a bizarre moral twist.

True enough. That's why I put in the qualifier of continental Europe in my earlier post.

This song linked below by Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg was literally banned in Britain when it came out. It actually got some minor airplay in the US. I remember hearing it a few times, that heavy breathing being a mystery to the young person I was at the time. Sounded dangerous and intriguing nevertheless.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3Fa4lOQfbA

The British movie Blowup had The Yardbirds and Jane Birkin all in one show. Jeff Beck destroyed a guitar and Birkin kept her clothes on and only breathed lightly, so the censors were OK with it. Those were the days.

I now consider this song to be the X rated equivalent of A Whiter Shade Of Pale. Classic anthemic.

Marines, by contrast, typically come out out of boot camp hard-ons with haircuts, almost automatons - it's not an unusual sight to see a column of marines told to march into a brick wall, and they do, piling up nut to butt, still marching, against a solid brick wall.

Part of Marine training, I'm told, is that at one point they are not allowed to use the head all day till they're all doing the pee-pee dance, then allowed to use the head all at once, except there is only one toilet - you get the picture, a bunch of guys piled up around a toilet, pissing on themselves and each other, and they probably have to go march again afterwards.

Some one had a firm grip on your leg while he was telling you this.
You on the other hand seem extreemly gulible.

Aswad, I'm getting the impression that all education (sex and otherwise) in Norway is mixed - boys and girls together.

Is this so? Are there any sex segregated schools? Here in Australia, private sex-segregated schools are far from unusual, though all State schools are non-segregated. I'm given to understand that situation is roughly similar in the US.

My feeling segregation of boys and girls during the times they are learning about and starting to enter into relationships feeds into the objectification of females as sex objects, and perhaps inadvertently helps create scenarios where rapists and rape are the eventual outcomes. It's much easier to objectify someone in their absence.

FR,

For some reason I thought this thread was locked. Since it's not...

My MOS was Munitions Systems Specialist, and I was not surprised to find myself the only female in my class at tech school. I'd been a machine operator prior to enlisting, so in general was comfortable in almost exclusively male environments.

But I was uneasy in Okinawa, perhaps due to a combination of there being even less women and having a supervisor who was popular with the rest of the guys despite being vocal in his hatred of women, blacks, Mexicans, Okinawans - basically, anyone who wasn't a white male (and white males from Texas were best.)

I quickly started dating another alpha, who got along with the SSgt by virtue of being a white male from Iowa who'd chosen to live in Texas. We were engaged within 6 weeks of my arrival and married in 4 months. I had another theory about my lightening quick courtship at the time, but found this yesterday and think it fits:

Women may have developed several defenses against and strategies to avoid rape. One is a partner preference for men that are effective bodyguards against other men such as physically and socially dominant men (although there may also be other evolutionary reasons for such a preference).

This strategy is not necessary in civilized society but in the macho environment of working in Ammo, overseas, with young men who have a misogynistic supervisor, drink heavily, and date "bar girls" who will do anything for a shot at an American husband...I think my subconscious was looking out for me.
