Alacrity -> Roles (2/15/2012 5:04:01 PM)

As a switch I really enjoy both sides of the BDSM power relationship. However, I can't play both sides with the same person. If I've topped someone I find it almost impossible to be a sub for them. The opposite is just as true.

Do others generally find this the case?

I don't and know of others on this forum who don't. On the other hand, I also know of those who would agree with you. Everyone is different.

When I bottomed, it was only with those that I also topped. There was no submission involved for either of us.

I can happily switch back and forth with the same person. Hib might be onto something about whether or not there's submission as opposed to bottoming. For some people submission involves a mental and emotional state that's different than letting someone beat/dominate/use you for a period of time, and that might be hard to let go of when it was their turn to kneel. I can get pretty darned submissive (especially when being hit), but I have no trouble later on flipping it around and being dominant with that same person. Not sure if that's typical among switches or not, but like you I'm curious what other people say.

I never felt not in charge of the situation, no matter what was happening. There were rules of engagement, if you will, and following them made the game more fun, but it was a game, for fun and sensation.

When I was switching, I could never do it with the same person. But I know others who do.
