That's a shame. I wasn't a fan, but he was a world-class shit stirrer, and I can respect that. [:D]

I'll just keep using the New York Times and Ted Rall, I suppose. I go to a wide range of sources to inform my thinking on issues, but whenever possible, I prefer to serve lefties the facts on their own dishes. [:D]

Owner59 -> RE: Brierbart dies of a heart attack ? (3/1/2012 8:10:00 PM)

Rigghht....reading,quoting,sourcing/linking BigGov-dot-whatever means you`re............. "open minded"........[8|]

Or is your attraction...... his race-baiting dirty tricks?

Fightdirecto -> RE: Brierbart dies of a heart attack ? (3/1/2012 8:33:25 PM)

I feel sorry for his family and friends.

That said - I do not feel sorry for him. The world is a better place without him on it.

TheHeretic -> RE: Brierbart dies of a heart attack ? (3/1/2012 8:34:06 PM)

I'm trying to think if I've ever used BigGovernment as a link, and I don't think I have. There might be one somewhere I suppose. Why don't you go look and find out, since you're so certain of it?

Now I do know I've questioned on the credibilty of it, when others of the right have jumped in on a story without giving it a moment of reflection as gleefully you did with... well, as you do all the damn time.

David Frum: "Andrew Breitbart, 1969-2012

quote:

“Of the dead, speak nothing but what is good.”

It’s an ancient rule and a wise one, but one that does not do justice to the life and career of Andrew Breitbart, dead today aged 43.

It is impossible to speak nothing of a man who traced such a spectacular course through the contemporary media.

But to speak only “good” of Andrew Breitbart would be to miss the story and indeed to misunderstand the man.

The good was there. Breitbart was by all accounts generous with time and advice, a loving husband and father, and a loyal friend...

He waged a culture war minus the “culture,” as a pure struggle between personalities. Hence his intense focus on President Obama: only by hating a particular political man could Breitbart bring any order to his fundamentally apolitical emotions.

Because President Obama was black, and because Breitbart believed in using every and any weapon at hand, Breitbart’s politics did inevitably become racially coded. Breitbart’s memory will always be linked to his defamation of Shirley Sherrod and his attempt to make a national scandal out of back payments to black farmers: the story he always called “Pigford” with self-conscious resonance.

Yet it is wrong to see Breitbart as racially motivated. Had Breitbart decided he hated a politician whose ancestors came over on the Mayflower, Breitbart would have been just as delighted to attack that politician with a different set of codes. The attack was everything, the details nothing.

This indifference to detail suffused all of Breitbart’s work, and may indeed be his most important and lasting legacy. Breitbart sometimes got stories right (Anthony Weiner). More often he got them wrong (Sherrod). He did not much care either way. Just as all is fair in a shooting war, so manipulation and deception are legitimate tools in a culture war...

Premature death deprived him of the chance at redemption often sought and sometimes found by people who have done wrong in their lives and work.

And this is where it becomes difficult to honor the Roman injunction to speak no ill of the dead. It’s difficult for me to assess Breitbart’s impact upon American media and American politics as anything other than poisonous. When one of the leading media figures of the day achieves his success by his giddy disdain for truth and fairness — when one of our leading political figures offers to his admirers a politics inflamed by rage and devoid of ideas — how to withhold a profoundly negative judgment on his life and career?

Especially when that career was so representative of his times?

We live in a time of political and media demagoguery unparalleled since the 19th century. Many of our most important public figures have gained their influence and power by inciting and exploiting the ugliest of passions—by manipulating fears and prejudices—by serving up falsehoods as reported truth. In time these figures will one by one die. What are we to say of this cohort, this group, this generation? That their mothers loved them? That their families are bereaved? That their fans admired them and their employees treated generously by them? Public figures are inescapably judged by their public actions. When those public actions are poisonous, the obituary cannot be pleasant reading.

SternSkipper -> RE: Brierbart dies of a heart attack ? (3/2/2012 7:48:17 AM)

That article pretty much nails it. Only thing I'd add is that today there's a slew of little punk-ass phony journalist/inciters scrambling around trying to figure out who they can suck up to to sell their ill-gotten 'stories' to. Like the puny piece of shit that started the small riot around the Occupy folks bear the Air and Space Museum and got innocent people pepper gassed and beaten.
I doubt even a piece of shit like Limbaugh will have the time of day to give to those guys.
Maybe Adam Kolkesh is staffing up for another year of fucking with people's heads on behalf of RTV.

Owner59 -> RE: Brierbart dies of a heart attack ? (3/2/2012 8:35:07 AM)

Thanks Flight....pretty much nails it for me.

To actually take pleasure from someone`s death is not normal.

A feeling of relief, when a world-class douche-bag like Roy Cohn or Joseph McCarthy is gone, is pretty normal.

This will be something to remember when Dan Rather goes to meet his maker.

Yeah. You need to fact-check your Dan Rather propaganda there, because everyone knows it's horseshit.

Consensus seems to be building he was whacked. I am waiting for the materials he was about to release about Obama the next day.

Tell that to the Libyans. Tell that to the Italians who hung Mussolini from a lamp post. Tell that to the Republicans who were braying and jeering gleefully when the last standing Kennedy croaked, come to that.
Schaundenfreude is a natural drive and none of us are saints.

Anaxagoras -> RE: Brierbart dies of a heart attack ? (3/2/2012 2:43:48 PM)

Its telling to list Breitbart amongst two genocidal tyrants, and judging by the reaction of those who tastelessly cheered his death on here (specifically Hippiekinkster and Fightdirecto), thats the light in which they see Breitbart. The worst thing he did was strip the context of the footage of Sherrod. An objectionable thing to do, especially when she lost her job but does that make him an evil individual? No it makes him a pretty average media sort actually. The media repeatedly twists and strips comments of their context.

I can't say how accurate the article by David Frum is with regard to Breitbart's overall character but his piece exaggerates one point to miss another much more fundamental point. Breitbart seemed to be waging a war against the media that he preceived as prejudiced. If he was economical with the truth (I can't say to what extent as I hardly ever looked at his sites) then he surely learnt those lessons fom the people he opposed. In other words it is absurd to suggest he has had such a gravely poisonous impact on the media and on politics that he changed the character of these respective fields to a significant extent. It gives the guy far too much credit IMHO, and excuses how sensationalistic and dumbed down the mainstream media is, and has been for a very long time. BTW those who celebrated his death actually gave him the kind of response he probably would've wanted... [:D]

Moonhead -> RE: Brierbart dies of a heart attack ? (3/3/2012 4:29:40 AM)

I was making a point about people enjoying somebody's death, rather than a moral comparison.
