Three of my personal favorites:

The Lesbian S/M Safety Manual by Pat Califia/SAMOIS Relevant to anyone, lesbian or not

The Topping Book and The Bottoming Book both by Dossie Easton

S/M 101 by Jay Wiseman

In the interest of full disclosure--I personally know all of the authors--but I assure you--these are all really solid texts and worth reading.

The best way to be safe is to use common sense.

and it doesn't cover a lot of the newer toys and fetishes-- but if you're looking for some basics--how to whip, crop, paddle etc. differences between implements, basic bondage, emotional aspects of BDSM, safewords, etc. they are a good start for total novices.

Status: offline 		Beyond that, your local community may offer workshops, if so take them. Being able to watch and ask questions will take you a lot further than a basic book can.

The books are great. Workshops are great. One-on-one teaching is great, but despite them all, things sometimes happen.
Get your first aid. Use your smarts. Think about the risks ahead of time to be prepared. Have fun

Status: offline 		I agree on the first aid training, a must. Also start small, don't read a book then start into fireplay and the like next day.
