Marc, Cheapskates who drive AMC Pacers will absolutely revel in the idea of a light bulb that costs nothing to run and can be transferred in a will. So just be patient on the recyclable-probate condom thing... there are still some issues but they're working on it.

Incidentally, The L-Prize costs less than one Super PAC attack ad campaign and unlike their result... The L-Prize actually PRODUCED SOMETHING THAT BENEFITED AMERICANS.

Yeah, I swapped the 12v lights on the sailboat for LEDs, and wound up almost a year later having forgotten that I might need (eventually) to recharge the battery. Usually I'd only get 2-3 night-time cruises before the old bulbs ran the battery down (it's garden-tractor size), but we did a dozen night-runs plus maybe a couple-hundred racing hours with the instruments on.

The difference in current draw for the same light output is amazing, even though that's why I changed 'em out. Now if I could just remember to haul the solar trickle charger down the marina ...

...

Cool stuff. I don't like CFLs in every fixture, and these might make good Christmas gifts. With a bit of luck, they'll have some very attractive LED light fixtures in a reasonable price range when we start redoing the bathrooms, down the road.

Let's be honest, though. Some of that electrical savings in the lights is just going to go right back into heating costs. I kinda like the way the three-way incandescent fixture in my office keeps the room a few degrees warmer than the rest of the house, on a cold winter night.

Given, though, that incandescent lighting is not an efficient heating technology, you can use the savings to heat more effectively.

And save on air conditioning in the warmer months, by the same token.

the high cost is due (in part?) to the high cost of the rare metals that go into the lights manufacture... perhaps that is why the US govt wanted new cheaper ones invented..

Call it $65 over the 10 years then. VS like maybe $550... No magic going on here and on FOSSIL FUELED ELECTRICITY, it'll only get more expensive... unless you can train yourself to believe the republican "Magic of Disney" approach, where all you need to do is elect republicans and whole energy crises go away altogether[sm=cute.gif][sm=cute.gif]

Now that it's invented and on the market... it's subject the electronics market rules of the road?
There are virtually no exceptions. [:D] Yjr Rare Earth issue will be moot, sooner rather than later,

Also consider the source of power changes as you reduce usage.
At the highest usage, you see Deisel electricity generation, ie Oil.
At the next lower usage, you tend to see Coal.
At the lowest usage levels, solar and other renewable sources are available.
So by lowering usage, you allow renewable sources to handle more of the load, which reduces pollution, reduces climate change, and saves more of the non-renewable energy for future generations.
