The sore throat was not super bad but I was really flemmy, so lots of clearing it out. By hacking it up or blowing my nose. At one point it started coming up with streaks of bright red,I'm mostly done with my cold, congestion is mostly gone, everything mostly back to normal. but it still feels like I am being stabbed in the back of my throat when I yawn and there's still pretty regularly streaks of bright red if I have to bring any phlegm up.

I've had some real foists of a throat ache before but not bloody phlegm.

Did you get checked for strep?

Far as I know, bloody phlegm is never normal and is not a good sign. I would say get thee to a physician, go!

I've had strep twice, this is not strep.


I'll call my dr about it.

She said drink lots of water to ease the expulsions and nurse the cold to completion. I should be fine.

Sounds like you busted a capillary while coughing. I get 'bloody' phlegm when I get a really bad cold so just take it easy and get a good cough syrup. I use a homemade one of onions and sugar (it actually works for me).

Its only normal if there is white and green pus coming up along with it.

Hi TFB

Generally, phlegm---anything coming up from your lungs or out of your nose, should be clear. If sick it may be a bit cloudy. If it is yellow or greenish, you have an infection and should visit your local health center or physician.

Bloody phlegm can be a problem. IF the blood is in the phlegm from your nose, there is a good chance it is from blowing too hard, sneezing too hard, irritation etc.

However--coughing up bloody sputum should never be ignored. If your cough lasts for 2 weeks or more, you have trouble breathing, you rapidly loose weight, night sweats, high fever--get to a doctor immediately. Personally, I'd call for a second opinion. In general, sore throats do not cause bleeding. Hope you're feeling better soon.

Haus the explanation is, that tons of coughing or hacking can break little capillaries, I am keeping an eye on it.

If you have a history of respiratory illness, and have a chest rattling cough, the kind that you can feel to your bones... you know the one... then you can cause some damage to your lungs from the actual physical process of coughing.

if the blood spotting in your phlegm is rare, intermittant, and only spotty. then this may be the case. Have been to the doctor several times after coughing up blood speckeled phlegm, (history of bronchitus when younger) and every time this was the suggested cause. if it happens more than once, this may not be the case though.


i would also suggest cough suppresants, although if you still are producing tons of mucus then this may actually lead to more problems, so take decongestants to dry out before the cough supressants.
(once was supressing cold without it and it developed into penumonia due to not being able to clear my lungs properly) :(

Yes I know the ones you describe. Happily was very little coughing, but I was producing lots of phlegm:/

Ask your doc if you could use otc Mucinex (guaifenesin) to liquefy the junk. It'll help bring it up and get it out. When I have bronchitis I get better a lot faster with this on board.

PS: Be extra diligent about birth control when taking guaifenesin! It liquefies your cervical mucous, making it easier for spermies to invade. Because of this trait, it's sometimes recommended for women trying to conceive.

I was thinking the same thing Shahar...

(we're seeing more and more TB these days in younger folks...so it's always good to rule that out first...) Hope it's nothing serious.
