SEATTLE - A 3-year-old boy fatally shot himself with a gun he found in a car while his family stopped for gas early Wednesday in Tacoma, police said. It was western Washington's third recent shooting by a child.

"It is incredible in light of the other ones," said Tacoma police Officer Naveed Benjamin. "You would think people would take more care, not less."

The Tacoma-area family had stopped for gas about 12:30 a.m. The father put his pistol under the seat and got out to pump gas while the mother went inside the convenience store, Benjamin said.

They left their son and their infant daughter in the car. The boy climbed out of his child seat, found the gun and shot himself in the head, police said. He was declared dead at a hospital. The girl was not injured.

Detectives questioned the parents and have called the shooting a tragic accident, Benjamin said. The father has a concealed weapons permit, and no charges are anticipated, he said.

Washington does not have a law specifically concerning child access to firearms.

The shooting follows the death of the 7-year-old daughter of a Marysville police officer in Stanwood on Saturday when a sibling found a gun and fired while the parents were out of their car. And on Feb. 22, an 8-year-old girl was critically wounded in a Bremerton classroom when a gun fired inside the backpack of a 9-year-old boy as he put it on a desk.

"It's another tragedy in a very short period of time," Benjamin said.

It highlights the need for people to secure guns, he said.

"You can't predict what children are going to do," he said. "You need to unload and lock it up if you're not carrying it. ... It's really not that hard to practice firearm safety."

Twenty-seven states have some form of law to prevent child access to firearms, but Washington is not one of them. Such laws can include criminal penalties for adults who allow children to get their hands on guns, according to the San Francisco-based group Legal Community Against Violence.

State lawmakers considered a measure in the regular legislative session that ended Friday that would have required additional testing of gun locks and safes before the equipment is distributed to law enforcement officers for home use. The bill was prompted by the 2010 death of a Clark County deputy's 3-year-old son. The toddler took a gun from a department-issued safe, which the family insisted was faulty.

News of the latest shooting caused Washington Cease Fire Executive Director Gregory Roberts to groan, "Oh no."

"We think guns are dangerous, but they are not treated as dangerous by our society or by laws or by our regulations," he said. "We regard guns as some sort of sacred object that should not be subject to regulation."

The Seattle organization is currently running a campaign of ads on buses urging people to think twice about owning guns. People with guns in their home or car are more likely to injure or kill a family member or loved one than to use it against an intruder, he said.

"Unfortunately we've been saying the same thing over and over because we see the same thing happening over and over," Roberts said.

In Saturday's shooting, off-duty Marysville police Officer Derek Carlile had parked the family van near Stanwood City Hall, and he and his wife were out of the vehicle when one of their children found the loaded gun and fired. The shot hit 7-year-old Jenna Carlile, and the girl, the oldest of their four children, died Sunday at a Seattle hospital.

The 8-year-old Bremerton girl, Amina Kocer-Bowman, remained in serious condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after nearly dying in the accidental shooting at Armin Jahr Elementary, where a classmate brought a handgun to class. Authorities believe the boy took the .45-caliber gun from the glove compartment of a car while visiting his mother and her boyfriend at their home. He lives with an uncle.

The 9-year-old pleaded guilty last week to reckless endangerment and was sentenced to probation and counseling. He is expected to testify against his mother, Jamie Lee Chaffin, and her boyfriend, Douglas L. Bauer, who were charged Tuesday with felony assault.

Chaffin and Bauer each could face up to five years in prison if convicted.

I learned to shoot when I was 8 and from the beginning I was taught gun safety, taught how guns aren't "cool" and taught that I didn't have to "prove I was a man" by carrying around a gun. When I was older and I had small children, I NEVER left a gun, loaded or unloaded, when my children or their friends could get their hands on it.

What's wrong with these parents????

Did your parents have guns while you were growing up?

Sadly, the parents in the articles have suffered a horrible loss that was caused by their own irresponsibility. That is a burden that will not go quietly in the night.

Whoever taught you how to shoot and how to treat a gun should be commended. I can only assume you will do the same with any of your charges. If you instill in them a proper respect for guns, they will, in turn, pass that on and we will have more responsible gun owners and fewer of these terrible accidents.

My father grew up on a ranch in Northwestern Colorado during the 1920's and learned to shoot at a younger age than I did.

Guns were, and IMO still are, tools and nothing more. A gun's only real purpose (othr than in war in the hands of a member of the military) is to kill animals to supplement the family's food supply. You fire at targets, not for pleasure, but to hone your skill in order to improve your ability to kill a food animal - "one shot, one kill and never fire unless it's a guarentee that you will kill the animal immediately." Otherwise the pistol, rifle or shotgun is unloaded and securely locked away with the ammunition locked away in a seperate container, preferably with a lock that has a different key.

I have been forced to kill other men in war with a gun (and with a knife and with my bare hands) - which is probably why I only take out my guns during hunting season to shoot animals.

How is it possible that an off duty officer would not have known better?  What is really amazing is that there was a case in my county, also in Washington, where an off duty sheriff's deputy left a private weapon in a gun safe issued to him by the Sheriff's office.  The officer's toddler son purportedly got into the safe, which the officer knew was malfunctioning, and shot himself.  What is worse, is that the officer and his bitch of a wife then tried to claim that their stepdaughter gave the gun to the toddler, and attempted to beat a confession out of her.  He was relieved of duty for that.  They are now suing the County for issuing them a malfunctioning gun safe.  Here is a link to the internal affairs report, it absolutely boggles the mind.

Wouldn't you think someone familiar with guns, like a police officer, would have better goddamn sense?  I hope the officer mentioned in the OP loses his job, also.

A gun is just a tool like any other the average home is full
of dangerous tools, substances ect. Parents have a responabilty
to protect children from all these things.
I learned very young how to use a gun,ax,saw, chainsaw, ect.
As a parent I taught my children the same lessons.

I truly hate to say it but "Cop" doesn't necessarily mean "Intelligent".

I'm a real estate broker and a lot of retired military and police enter the field. They have connections with their old buddies and, in the case of police, experience working with the public. Some of them do really well.

That said, one of the STUPIDEST people I have ever met was a lady who worked for me for a while. She wasn't just a retired cop, she had been a captain.

She literally came out of the rest room one day and asked if anyone could put some toilet paper on the holder for her because she couldn't figure it out.

She carried a fucking GUN.

DaddySatyr -> RE: Young Americans exercise their 2nd Amendment rights (3/15/2012 1:04:58 PM)

When I was first issued a hand gun, my youngest was 5. Unfortunately the weapon was nickle-plated which makes it even more desirable to young eyes.

The first thing I did, when it caught his attention was sit him down, clear the weapon, and let him touch it to remove the "mystery". Each subsequent time he'd ask to touch it, we went through the same ritual.

I took him to the firing range with me when he was 6. I had my .40 and he had a gas-propelled pellet gun. Strict safety precautions were observed and I taught him to treat that pellet gun like we treated my .40

When he was 8, I got him a .22 and took him with me to the range, semi-regularly. Of course there were minor mistakes and I corrected him, gently but sternly.

When he was 10, we were at the range and there was a gentleman there with a black powder pistol. I was never much of a "gun nut" but, I was a bit intrigued. When it looked like he was about finished, I took my son with me and went over to ask the guy a few questions.

During our chat, a few times, the guy was (sort of) waving the gun around. My son said: "Excuse me, sir? Shouldn't that weapon be pointing down range?" The guy was a bit "flustered" at being "corrected" by a ten year old but, I was beaming.

My son has never been arrested for carrying an illegal fire-arm. He's never accidentally shot one of his friends. He doesn't have much interest in guns, anymore (although he has a fascination with swords and such). The mystery was removed, early and it became "old hat".

This truly is a sad story and it is just one of the things that will eventually lead to more gun control. We never hear the good stories, anymore so, we're left with tragedies and people wringing their hands, tearing their shirts, and saying: "We have to do something!"

Truly, the gun owners in these cases are to blame and they will be; either personally or by the other people whose rights will be infringed upon as a result of their irresponsibility.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

Does anyone object to mandatory gun safety classes before one is able to get a permit?

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Young Americans exercise their 2nd Amendment rights (3/15/2012 1:16:28 PM)

Presumably, at least the cop mentioned in the OP would have had plenty of gun safety classes. How about an IQ test, instead?

The National Rifle Association objects - unless they are the only group allowed to conduct the mandatory gun safety classes.

She wasn't intelligent enough to realize it was snark. ZOOOOOOM, right over her head.

It is a requirement in TN. You must also have background checks, fingerprints, etc and they go over your record pretty hard. If you have ever taken meds for depression or been treated for other phychological probs, Even if you have an old DUI conviction you can pretty much forget it.

I might be ok with that, if he has other voter id and has been certified that he does not take oral contraceptives, cuz that is what is really at issue here.

It is one of those things afforded us, and just because you have the right, it is not always a grand idea that you exercise it, work or play, or treat it offhandedly.

People die by stupidity and nonchalance, good intentions notwithstanding.

Then you wonder what the fuckstick did with his tazer.

Indeed.

Fingerprint trigger locks?

I'm not knee-jerk opposed to this - would depend on the quality of instruction.

Plenty... And they were in a fireproof steel cabinet along with the ammo. The only family member the can beat me on the range is the brother who spent his career protecting 6 presidents.
Despite that I think the NRA has been taken over by assholes who either work for or are co-opted to protect gun commerce which basically has as a side benefit, tragedies like the OP describes.
I prefer a bow though... so here take this...

Yes. Shotguns of all gauges. I started shooting at ~14, skeet & trap, and participated in competition. My personal preference is for the 20ga.
My folks often went to Canada after geese.
