Nosathro -> Just how serious is the Government about Terrorist (3/16/2012 10:34:56 AM)

After reading this article it makes me wonder what is the our government really doing about terrorist. Some 40 former government officals are under invetigation about taking money from a terrorist group to lobby our government to remove them from a list of terrorist groups. The former goverment official include a Director of the FBI and a Chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff, some payments were as high as $30,000.00 for making speeches in favor of the terrorits. All their lawyers say is they just made a "mistake" it is against the law to be associated with terrorist groups.

You've bought into some bullshit. Mek is not a terror group it is simply an Iranian opposition group.

That is what Eddie has been claiming, unfortunately the Justice Dept. sees it differently.

Serious enough to issue subpoenas.

It looks complicated, they appear to have morphed into an opposition group w/respect to the Iranian ruling party, and considered potential assets.

I have to wonder if anybody has investigated where AOG gets it's funding, there were a lot of talking heads over at Fox making speeches for them after the Tiller murder.

Another thread on this recently:

http://www.collarchat.com/m_4059617/mpage_1/key_MEK/tm.htm#

The state dept. has known about the PMOI/MEK and anything they've been involved in since at least 1981. They are the largest opposition group to the Islamist theocracy in Iran. When the somewhat more friendly-to-US president Khatami was elected in 1997 he requested that the US put PMOI/MEK on the foreign terrorist organizations (FTO) list and the state dept. complied. Every time the designation has come up for review as required by law Iran asks for renewal and the state dept. complies. They were on the European list at one time but were removed in 2008.

I certainly do not take either side completely at their word, too much diffuse and iffy stuff going on here, but the state dept. has yet to provide anything coherent in the way of evidence or explanation as to just what activities or stated intentions of the group particularly pose a threat to Western interests.

Here's a word from Mr. Freeh:

I read through one of the stories above and now it's becoming clearer.

- The investigation "is targeted less at individuals, and more at where the money is coming from," said Reza Marashi, a former State Department official whose group, the National Iranian American Council, advocates against taking the MEK off the terrorism list, in an interview with Yahoo News Friday. -

I'll bet they do, being as that they are rival organizations. But this within the wiki page:

In November 2009, the NIAC came under scrutiny when Washington Times national security correspondent Eli Lake alleged that the organization, registered as a 501(c)(3) educational organization, could be "operating as a foreign lobby in violation of federal law".[3] Lake writes, "Mr. Parsi's history suggests a continuing commitment to changing U.S. policy on Iran, and he has clearly become more influential in Washington since the change of administrations."[3] In response, NIAC published a point by point rebuttal of the article written by Eli Lake, stating that "NIAC is a 501 c3 educational organization with an H election. As a result, NIAC is permitted to engage in lobbying up to 20% of its budget. NIAC and its staff are in full compliance with all regulations and laws" elaborating further that "Educational activities and advocacy for general policies, such as opposition to war - as opposed to specific legislation - are not lobbying under the law."

Not only is it legal for the NIAC to lobby, it is also apparently legal for them to work directly in the state dept. at high level positions

"said Reza Marashi, a former State Department official whose group, the National Iranian American Council, advocates against taking the MEK off the terrorism list, in an interview with Yahoo News Friday. -"

That explains a lot.

Pretty serious.

'The investigation, being conducted by the Treasury Department, is focused on whether the former officials may have received funding, directly or indirectly, from the People's Mujahedin of Iran, or MEK, thereby violating longstanding federal law barring financial dealings with terrorist groups. The sources, all of whom spoke on condition of anonymity, said that speaking fees given to the former officials total hundreds of thousands of dollars."

Those being investigated are advocating having PMOI/MEK removed from the FTO list, which listing was never legitimate in the first place unless you consider that being done as a favor to Iran as legitimate. The investigation is retaliation for their efforts. The rival group NIAC is embedded in our own state dept. and are driving this.

Does none of that trouble you?

It troubles me.

It shows just another level of corruption within our government.

When are we going to get serious, clean house in Washington and worry about America first?

Edwynn -> RE: Just how serious is the Government about Terrorist (3/18/2012 8:54:51 PM)

And as I say, I'm not falling for the MEK representatives' side hook line and sinker either. Considering all the big name high powered players involved here, this looks something like an internal fight that spilled out into the street. I doubt anyone's getting arrested from this. I'm not going to spend all week looking, but there's at least some noticeable bit more coherency in the MEK-siders story, hardly anything that makes sense from the state dept. other than robotic repetition that "they are listed as a FTO."
