FR

Hey Winnie
I can always tell that I'm depressed even when I can't see the signs inwardly--when my place gets messy, I know I'm not feeling good about myself. And there have been plenty of times when my house was not a place I was proud of.

I think what bothers me about my brother is that they aren't depressed....have the money to hire help....but just don't care. And they can't see the impact it's having on their kids.

Ishtarr:
I learned from the pros--never use a mop. The most efficient way to clean a floor is by hand, on one's hands and knees.

Bucket of hot water....then add the detergent/cleaner of your choice--always water first. Otherwise, it's suds up too much and is far more likely to leave a sticky residue. After I sweep, I take a wet rag, sponge or J-wipe, and go all the way around the perimeter, getting the baseboards and the crease between the wall/board and floor. Then I start in one corner and work my way back, all by hand. It will give you a clean unlike any other.

Haus, did you have a neighbor lady with linoleum floors and a bad back, whose husband had shoes that left black marks? And did you have to crawl around with steel wool getting the marks out?

Honestly, are these memories all generational? (I also remember when scrubbing the whitewalls tires white was a treat. [8|][&o])

Oh man, my mom used to get pissed at me--my combat boots used to always leave black marks on the floor! And yes...we had a little metal pail with a wooden scrub brush. I remember when I was staying with my folks for a couple of months in between cities--and I scrubbed the floor for my mom. She was so thrilled--she said it was the cleanest she had ever seen it. Mops just push dirt around--when I'm short on time or energy, I use a mop. When I want it done right, I get down on my hands and knees and do it by hand. Of course these days, it can have a Pavlovian effect. There's something just WRONG when you get turned on scrubbing your own floor, it's happened. kinda sad.

You are deeply perverted, Haus. [8D]

You're right, hands and knees is the best. Though with the amount of work that is, I usually leave that for spring cleaning or for when floors are really disgusting. My weekly wet routine is the one I described above.

The most important thing to me is, regardless of which technique used, that the dirty water is actually lifted off the floor instead of pushed around on it. I don't own a mop and never will, I think they're seriously gross.

I love steam cleaners too, though if you're going to get one, you really ought to just spend the money on a good one once, and save yourself the frustration with the cheaper versions which constantly break and don't work as well. There is nothing better for cleaning a toilet than high pressure steam. It's amazing the amount of gunk that can come out of all the bolts and fixtures of a toilet that's never been steam cleaned before, even if it did look clean before hand.

littlewonder -> RE: Fly Lady (3/27/2012 8:19:27 PM)

I have a steam cleaner that I absolutely love. I don't have to worry about the dirt just sliding around. I admit though, that I still get down on my hands and knees and scrub along the baseboards and corners since nothing ever really picks up dirt there.

Do any other women have a lowered tolerance for clutter pre-menstrually? This is also when I notice and clean floors, dust, and organize my desk at work. So I essentially schedule deep cleaning monthly because this is when I want to do it anyway. Or compelled, as the case may be.

If you had this premenstrual urge but are now menopausal, what happened to it?

Oh gawd... When you brought this up I wondered about it. I just started my period and yes, my need to clean calmed down! For about a week before my period I was noticing everything, even the fingerprints and dust on a light globe attached to my boy's ceiling fan.

Thanks for the laugh. At myself. *crosses eyes*

After the chemos my periods are sporadic. Whenever I skip a month, I'll be curious...to see if I am dusting the tv screen and spraying my pothos plant to get dust off the leaves, lol. (And if I notice dirt in the holes of the telephone.) [:D]

So "yes" to the first question, and "not sure" about the last.
