I am sure you fall well within the "snowbird" category, Zonie.

Sure, land in the West was acquired all kinds of different way, some was purchased, some was flat out stolen.  That doesn't mean that it should get ceded to the states, however.

The Feds actually paid for a lot of this land. Louisiana Purchase, remember? So yes, sell it to the states at current market value. Why do they believe they should get it for free?
As nearly as I can tell, Arizona is wall to wall snowbirds and dumb fucks.

Hey, I resemble that remark!

Actually, though, Arizona (north of the Gila) was acquired in the Mexican Cession in 1848, and then the Feds acquired the portion south of the Gila in the Gadsden Purchase in 1853.

Land acquisition in this country hasn't always been on the up and up, though. The Native American tribes were supposed to get much more land than they eventually ended up with. But as they say, the land doesn't belong to us, we belong to the land. Geronimo liked to stick it to the Feds when he could, so I'd like to think that his spirit is watching and having a good laugh over this.

Alice: How do you know I'm mad?
The Cat: You must be. Or you wouldn't have come here.

All of which suggests, given the Nations won the suit against BIA, but the BIA has no money to pay them, they should give that land to the Nations.

It would be worth it, I bet I'd be able to hear the Arizona Minutemen shrieking from here.

Hey, that'd be fine by me. The Apaches can take over the State Capitol if they want. I don't know if it's still up for sale or not. The legislature decided that they needed to sell it in order to balance the budget a few years ago.

Actually, the Minutemen are pretty much a memory now. They self-destructed with infighting and financial problems, so they're pretty much done and over with at this point. They were also outnumbered and outgunned by the smugglers and the cartels, so what they were doing was pretty dangerous anyway.

Actually, I've been a permanent resident since 1979. Snowbirds are only here in the wintertime, but they can't handle the hot summers.
