Millions of Americans (including myself) are of Dutch ancestry. We're from the same stock as you are. Of course, my ancestors came here a couple centuries ago, and we're all pretty much assimilated Americans now. I don't even speak Dutch. (My grandparents spoke Dutch, and my father knew a few phrases.)

Still, this is just a place where we live. There's no deep meaning behind "America," even as much as Europeans (and some Americans) try to make it so.

As for Europeans knowing about America more than Americans know about Europe, that's conditional. What I find more often than not is that Europeans know about American popular culture and media, but not much about America itself. They see America through Hollywood's lens, and that can often give a distorted view.

Sure, America is a violent place at times, although it varies from state to state. That's another problem with the European view of America, since they invariably view "America" as a singular, monolithic entity, without giving much consideration to the differences between the regions, states, and plethora of diverse cultures and sub-cultures which exist here.
