Arturas -> MSNBC reports Mayor makes Police Dept show police tapes and provide 911 tapes!!!! (3/30/2012 11:12:55 AM)

MSNBC reports today that the Mayor forced the police department to release the 911 and video tapes of Zimmerman's entry into the jail for questioning. OMG,what is going on here, police suppression of the facts?

Nope. It's normal for such information to be unreleased until the case is completed. The Mayor is bowing to politcial pressure and no other reason and is doing so against the wishes of the Prosecuter and those doing this investigation. There are good reasons for not releasing this information and few good ones. I cannot think of a good one except to fuel more MSNBC pundit judgements.

Thats what I said.
Hail the video nation,
Big Brother is watching you and me.

OP,

Ja, no question that you are right and this is the only possible explanation.

It does however cause me some consternation when I recall that Bad Boys, Cops, the one with Steven Segal and several others do just that.   Do you think they all have the same mayor bowing to pressure?   That might clear up the obvious discrepencies so rife around us as you are watching it and living it.

I'm going to disagree with that statement. For decades, since the beginning of the 24 hour news cycle, it has been customary to release 911 tapes, video, statements, etc. Hell, there are even cable networks that do nothing but show COPS and similar shows.

The Rodney King beating was on so much you couldn't avoid it. Most every evening news has a "perp walk" at least once a week.

If an organized crime figure is arrested, that's all you see for weeks.

Every newspaper in the country will release the blood alcohol level of a suspected drunk driver well before the trial (unless he is in the legal range then they don't bother).

FR:
If the case isn't being prosecuted, I really can't see why releasing this before it comes to trial is an issue.
It might prejudice the case against the individual who's just got away with murder?

What we're seeing here is a game of Hot Potato, where the Sanford PD has two teams, and the DA is playing too. Last one holding the potato goes to federal prison.

Fat chance.
They might possibly get impeached in the worst case.

Do you think the FBI and DOJ care about George Zimmerman?

Nope. They're there to answer the question, "Who caused Zimmerman to fail to be arrested on the night he killed Trayvon Martin?"

Hillwilliam -> RE: MSNBC reports Mayor makes Police Dept show police tapes and provide 911 tapes!!!! (3/30/2012 1:59:23 PM)

I'm thinking demotion and it'll be the DA for overruling the detective that initially wanted to charge Zimmerman with manslaughter.

I see the DA's job is to try cases, not tell the police what to do. They have a hard enough time without someone from judicial 'leaning' on them.

IMO, the detective being on record as wanting to file charges puts him totally in the clear.

I don't think either give a flying fuck about anything that happens in Florida in the first place, frankly.

The U.S. Freedom of Information Act Exemption for the following reasons allowed under Federal Law and found in this link:
http://www.sec.gov/foia/nfoia.htm

quote:

A personnel, medical, or similar file the release of which would constitute a clearly unwarranted invasion of personal privacy; Compiled for law enforcement purposes, the release of which:

1) could reasonably be expected to interfere with law enforcement proceedings,
2) would deprive a person of a right to a fair trial or an impartial adjudication,
3) could reasonably be expected to constitute an unwarranted invasion of personal privacy,
4) could reasonably be expected to disclose the identity of a confidential source,
5) would disclose techniques, procedures, or guidelines for investigations or prosecutions, or
6) could reasonably be expected to endanger an individual's life or physical safety;

The Special Prosecutor has invoked these exemptions according to this Reuters article. http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/03/30/us-usa-florida-shooting-idUSBRE82T03220120330?feedType=RSS

Later, the Mayor ordered the release anyway. Nice, huh? The Special Investigator orders a clamp down during the investigation, common sense really, and the Mayor orders the police department to do it anyways. Very nice. Politics and drama v.s. Investigative Procedure.

I think this is well answered, as always, but only because it relies on fact, law and common sense rather than drama and spin and agenda.

It's an election year, and there appears to be a racially related conspiracy to obstruct justice by retired judges, the da's office, and the chief of police. It's a ham-handed plot, but it's a heck of a narrative and I don't see it going away.

It's beyond "George Zimmerman has to explain to a Judge why Trayvon Martin is dead" ( which the Florida cops and prosecutors can handle ) to "Why was he released at all on Sunday night. Who called whom, when, and what did they speak about. How far does this go when a veteran cop feels he needs to file a CYA affidavit?"

There's a right to personal privacy you need a warrant to pierce? I'm all for it, but I must have missed the memo. When did this happen?

Why would retired judges obstruct justice and save this Zimmerman who is a "nobody" from the law just because it is an election year? Could you elaborate on how you got there?

Robert Zimmerman, George's dad is a retired Judge. Didn't you know that? How the hell else do you think Z's charges for assaulting a cop got diverted. Do you know ANYONE who gets pretrial diversion for swinging on a cop?

The Privacy Act of 1974.

mnottertail -> RE: MSNBC reports Mayor makes Police Dept show police tapes and provide 911 tapes!!!! (3/30/2012 2:25:17 PM)

But the release was not requested by the public under the freedom of information act.
And there is no prohibition, only reasons why they may be lawfully denied.

Another epic fail.

No. I did not. Probably because I am letting the authorities deal with this. Still, that does not seem to justify your post that "retired judges" are interfering because it is an election year so can you elaborate on this? Do you think retired judges are interferring with the Special Investigator also?

The mayor has no authority over the DA. If the DA had wanted to say "Mr Mayor, with all due respect, you can take a long walk on a short pier" there would have been no repurcussions.
