It sounds to me like whoever was running the show didn't think everything through fully. Even if this wasn't an 'adult business' but let's say a nightclub, zoning regulations might not permit running a business there of any kind, or for example a nightclub or whatever. Commercial businesses where people gather generally have requirements for egress to the venue, proof of fire extinguishers, evacuation plans and the like which I doubt these folks had. Even if this is a 'private club' as opposed to let's say a publicly open business, it is regulated as a business. They might have been able to get away with it if the land and such was owned by a private group and member dues went to pay for the place on a non profit basis, but even then it would probably not pass muster.

I suspect they were relying on the owners to keep quiet and they didn't realize that the daughter was a member of either the church lady or women against porn kind of screwed up woman, and that is all it takes (the town probably knew about it but wouldn't do anything unless a complaint was filed). Of course, if this had been a group of snake handling Christians or evangelicals forming their own 'church' they probably wouldn't be touched but that is life I am afraid.

It is behind closed doors, no one can see what happens there, as far as I can tell it is out of the way so no one can hear what is happening, why should they care when it has nothing to do with them.

It is a shame the states seem to be so closed minded about it, in england it is diffrent, we have massive events for this type of thing.

Nice point.

I'm going with the zoning issue.

Barns are generally very flammable, have relatively few exit, rather poor fire protection and don't pay taxes.

That being said, I have no idea what's happening there outside of the article.

If it's zoned for residential and not commercial purposes then it absolutely is a zoning issue, just like the guy in Phoenix who decided to operate a de-facto church on residential property, they shut him down and sent him to jail. This is no different if you've got a mass congregation of people coming and going. Additionally its unclear who the owner of the land is, if this individual is doing it on private land and not violating existing zoning guidelines, batter up, however if something is amiss, then that needs to be addressed before people go into martyr-mode.

Not true, same situation happened here to a guy running a Church out of his barn. Zoning regulations are there for a reason and if you give the AHJ a reason to come after you, you ought to know that all the fury as hell doesn't amount to anything close to what those people can accomplish. Its simple logistics, you live in a residential area that is not zoned for commerce. Its also a matter of courtesy, having people rolling in and out all night long isn't the best way to go about being a good neighbor unfortunately.

At lest you guys on the other side of the pond get to actually have one to close down.. In blighty you would be thrown into a pit and prosecuted for planning violations..

Oh, there are such places here, they just have the sense to get all the relevant planning permits and so on, and not give the PTB easy excuses to shut them down.
