George Zimmerman to be charged in Trayvon Martin shooting, official says

Florida special prosecutor Angela Corey plans to announce as early as Wednesday afternoon that she is charging neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman in the shooting of Trayvon Martin, according to a law enforcement official close to the investigation.

It was not immediately clear what charge Zimmerman will face.

...The announcement of a charge against Zimmerman would come a day after Zimmerman’s attorneys withdrew from the case, citing their inability to contact Zimmerman.

Lawyers Craig Sonner and Hal Uhrig on Tuesday expressed concern about Zimmerman’s emotional and physical well-being, saying he has taken actions without consulting them. They also said they do not know where Zimmerman is.

“You can stop looking in Florida,” Uhrig told reporters. “Look much further away than that.”

Had the investigating officer not been interfered with by a civilian in the first place, we would have been spared this whole foofraw.

2nd Degree is heavier than what I would have charged. I guess there are even more holes in Zimmerman's story than we've heard of or figured out. I can't wait for pleadings to be submitted. Now the crucible of Justice will burn away all the bullshit, and we'll get to the bottom of this.

Interesting how one prosecutor doesn't charge and the other goes all the way to 2nd degree murder.

Fargle, I suspect that the DA is angling for a no-contest on manslaughter, as a plea bargain from the 2nd degree charge.
If the DA started at manslaughter, it would give Zimmy every reason to fight on in court. By giving a choice of "minor sentence for making life easy or long sentence if we have to fight it out," the court can save money...
So it doesn't mean the evidence is different from what we have already heard...
OTOH, you may be entirely right, I'm just speculating.

15 years max for manslaughter vs possible life ( looks like average 2nd Degree sentences are about 20 years... )

I wonder if George Zimmerman's dad is that fucking stupid. I want it to go the distance because after all this speculation, I want to see the adjudication of every g-ddamned fact.

Not unexpected. The facts are considerably fuzzy, and witness accounts seem to conflict.

If you listened to the press conference you would have thought the prosecutor was just elected as President... "I'd like to thank this person and that person blah blah blah...and introduce the Governor"...what a circus.

Lets hope all involved get justice.

I wonder if he will be free until his trial or if he will get tossed in the slammer until then... If it does go to trial and doesnt get plea-bargined down.. I wonder if Zimmy will take the stand and testify.. I wonder who his lawyer will be..

Man, this afternoon it was on tv while i was waiting and various lawyers were out trying for their 15 minutes of fame.. one lawyer commenting on his lawyers and what they shouldnt have done.. and another commenting on the whole situation.. sheesh.. talk about a circus..

Z has a new lawyer.

..did he actually met this one in person?? or are they waiting for the day of the trial for that??

I guess that might explain why he stopped all communication to his freebie lawyers.. Zimmy should have told them on Sunday to shut up and good bye.. Instead he gave them the chance to several more days of free publicity (at his expense, imo).. guess they knew that was ending which is why they had a press conference to announce that they quit.. better to get it out that you quit than you were fired/dumped..

Important reminder, thanks. Zimmerman is legally presumed innocent at this point.

Wouldn't that be double jeopardy? I'm never entirely sure how that works.

Not if for different offenses. And as in the OJ case it doesn't prevent a civil suit either. But it might not be necessary in any case.

It certainly strikes me as violating the Fifth, DC, but the lawyers have found their way around it, when it suits the Feds to do so. Apparently, looking at Trayvon funny and having him wind up dead is a whole different offense to the Feds, than looking at Trayvon funny and having him wind up dead in a state case.

I'm curious about a few things. How does Florida define 2nd degree murder, and do Florida juries have a lesser offense option in their deliberations, to start with.

There's a 25 year minimum, since a firearm was used, and yes, manslaughter is a lesser-included offense, and that one is pretty much a slam-dunk. Plea deal for 15 years on manslaughter?
