I think it happens in everyday conversations too, I've even seen it happen in meetings with a structured agenda, its just the nature of the beast (mind) to wander, if its not kept disciplined or on a specific target (topic). I know I do it myself, someone says something that makes me think of something else that might seem to have nothing to do with the topic at hand.
