Poor sleep is a bitch.

Too much exercise before bed can keep you from sleeping. How much caffeine are you taking in? Cigarettes? Nicotine is a stimulant. Other stimulants?

Benedryl makes most people very drowsy. So do valerian capsules. I would try both of those (forget valerian tea, it tastes like old socks.)

Oh, could you be entering perimenopause? Insomnia is probably the number one indicator.

How is your sleep hygiene? Do you go to bed at the same time? Sleep in the dark? Turn the PC off, if it's in the room? Have a consistent bed time ritual? All these things help. If you have/done all that, then stop forcing yourself to sleep, and just lie there and rest as best you can.

Actually stopped smoking a while ago, not too heavy on the coffee and none after 4 PM. Don't think it's hormonal, it really was care taker burnout. Had some really rough times with health scares for my friend, so I was basically afraid to fall asleep... Top that with extensive oral surgery and the extraction of a wisdom tooth and I couldn't take any of the heavy pain meds as I was afraid to not wake up if there is an emergency and you got a recipe for not being able to sleep and the dogs at home, both going through surgeries (Kia had a knee joint replacement)

I'm meeting up with friends far more and I'm able to switch off for an hour or two, that helps A LOT and I am able to sleep now most of the time.

Also, LadyConstanze, you are a good friend to be taking care of him. It is a stressful situation, even if you don't mentally perceive it as stress, your body still does, and that can disrupt things. I do also want to echo DesFIP's comment about burnout. Is there anything you can do in the short term, while still providing your friend with appropriate care, to recharge your batteries? I know sometimes when I get burned out it affects my sleep, and just being able to step away from the regular routine for a bit seems to press the reset button. It is almost as if the poor sleep becomes a bad habit that one needs to "shake" oneself out of, if you know what I mean.

I hope your friend recovers soon and, in the meantime, that you are able to catch some zzzzzzz......sweet dreams...

It was exactly the worry that did me in, the constantly being on alert and worrying about not being awake if there is a crisis. It's just that I thought a heart transplant is so much more difficult, and the steroids and their side effects that he had to cope with, that I felt seriously like a wimp complaining about something so relatively trivial as bad sleep. Luckily he noticed a while ago that I seem to be very jittery and had dropped something like 10 lbs in a week (at any other time I would have been delighted) and mentioned it to his doctor, who was quite alarmed that I didn't have any relief person... He sat me down and said he wants me to be well and have some fun, I took a night off, and sometimes the odd hour to meet up with friends, and it made a massive change. Not that all the sleep problems disappeared but I can manage them now.

Why on earth do people feel it acceptable to say things on the net that they would know were not appropriate in face to face conversation.

Detachment and/or sociopathic tendencies? Well, they seem plausible. Frosty the Snowman was a sociopath, and a masochist to boot.

OP: It doesn't sound physical, it sounds mental. If it is, you should try new relaxation techniques. (The ones you've tried - i.e. when you mentioned meditation and CDs don't seem to be working.)

I hope everything works out for you.

Thanks, did work out, see above...

And here is a Ponder for when you can't sleep: WHY ARE THERE NO GREEN MAMMALS?

Nighters, all!

Cuz mammals don't do photosynthesis?

Actually fell asleep on a floating chair (one of those inflatable pool toys) and I'm seriously bright ginger now and with the oddest tan lines, luckily Italian skin doesn't really burn, the only thing that pisses me off is that I dropped my book while dozing off and that became not only soaked but also just single pages which I had to fish out of the pool filter

Melatonin works extremely well for me. I take it about an hour before I want to go to sleep. It's something that I take, but can't actually tell I've taken it....there isn't an unnatural medication type feeling. I just get sleepy in a natural way. The best part for me is that the quality of my sleep is enhanced. I take it even on nights when I am very tired because those are the nights that I toss and turn. The melatonin helps me get to sleep, stay asleep, and feel like I"ve slept the next day. Plus as you know I'm sure, it's a natural substance found in our bodies.

Actually not burned at all, just an interesting lighter spot running over my belly, looks like I wore a strange bikini...

LOL, I am not an idiot who goes out and plays grilled chicken, but I just have a lot of pigmentation, very pale in the winter but it doesn't take a lot of sun and people start asking me (ever so politely and slightly embarrassed) if I'm mixed race, the sun does me a hell lot of good and my energy levels just bounce up, but as far as I know I'm Caucasian, unless of course my parents adopted me and lied to me all those years (well, I kinda had that suspicion for a while, just kidding), there could be an Arab family missing a daughter...

The raccoons came back with your missing top and put it there as you slept and they watched and giggled.

More like drifting on the pool with one of those inflatable pool loungers and slumped, so part of my belly was under the armrest - but your story sounds better

Lady, rejoice in the sun.

Better take it easy, other half and I were on Skype today and his comments were along the line of "The sun suits you, but if you start eating soul food and listening to rap, there will be some questions...."

Tried to be a Goth in my teen days, worked in the winter, in the summer just going to the shop without tons of sun block and a big hat and gloves ruined the look completely, but the decadence of a cup of coffee or a cool drink and floating around with an inflatable pool toy is just so appealing. Kinda funny, the sun bleaches my hair to a bright ginger but my skin just gets dark, used to be angry that I never got freckles, now I kinda can see the advantage of it. First time that I actually just was lazing in the sun, usually it's swimming or inline skating, but I don't do sunbathing, a bit too restless for that. I like beach holidays but only if I can surf, always wondered how people could just lay in the sun and do nothing - it seems like such a waste of time.

In all fairness, I've made that precise suggestion face to face, albeit more carefully couched.

I simply assumed she'd already tried getting off, or it would've been mentioned earlier. Cuz, let's face it, that's as natural as a remedy can ever get, and we're all adults on a forum for kinksters. While I haven't made a survey, the women I've asked about it have reported transient fatigue and relaxation after orgasm, both of which are conducive to sleep. Most of the guys I've asked report using it consciously for the purpose of sleep, and many have made it part of their sleep routine, particularly when they're single. However, it's also a very mild effect, for either gender, so it's not likely to be sufficient if one has a bout of persistent insomnia.

I'd say it's mostly a question of him being insensitive in his wording, and if anyone disagrees with that, I'd love to hear why.

IWYW,
- Aswad.

Indeedy. Hell's bells. Is there nothing at all that can be done about that, Lady C?

Well, at risk of being cast amongst the demons . . . .

A technique that a Japanese ex once taught me and has been tremendously helpful ever since:

I fantasise. About whatever it is that will conjure up the most vivid and absorbing fantasy. Yep, that will indeed generally be something sexual but - and this is important - in a far, far out, ultra-unreal, way.

The theory is that the fantasy world is as close as you can get, whilst still being conscious, to the dream world. The first will therefore segue into the second.

Your mileage may vary. But, sincerely, this does work for me.

I have to second that one, Peon.

I use it every night, so I don't even think about it anymore.

I disagree that it needs to be far out, so long as it can keep your mind fully occupied.

Sidebar: daydreaming as a bridge to sleep also put a stop to my hypnagogic hallucinations during the transition.

IWYW,
- Aswad.
