People get caught up in witch-hunts because we don't teach children that they don't have a right to persecute something just because it disgusts them.  We teach children to stand up for what they believe in, to do what they think is right, and all that bullshit--we never seem to teach children about understanding other people with values and opinions we don't agree with.  As long as we're all just going by our personal sense of what's OK and what's disgusting, EVERYONE is going to find SOMETHING that disgusts them, and then start criticizing it--usually with outsize sanctimoniousness.  Few people in that "All in the Family" thread seemed to remember that everything people were saying about that situation (it's wrong, it's creepy, it's against the Bible, no normal sane woman would ever consent to that) are exactly the same things that vanillas say about BDSM.  How ironic.  Instead, everyone seemd to have the sense that, well, if vanillas say that about us, they're just wrong, but if we say that about other people, well, we must be right!

It's not high school.  It's the Crusader mentality, and it's what's driving this country into the dust.
I agree with L&M. From what I've seen, people tend to start witch hunts or get caught up in them based on righteous indignation stemming from a twisted sense of morality(ies).

Ive always wondered what this meant. I read it on profiles all the time;  people complaining that their profiles were either stolen or deleted. whats that all about?

I'll take a guess at it. It would have to be someone with a lot of spite and little time plunked away at the keyboard till the profile opened and he or she hit delete.

I see so many that say their profiles vanished, so I thought it was some type of technical issue on the site. Thanks.

I wonder, is this whole thread a way of calling out people for starting other threads that someone else does not like, but we are not naming these "immature and grade school" posters.... oh the irony...smiles

Well seeing as it's my thread I can answer that with a simple and emphatic NO it's not. If that was my goal I probably wouldn't have written this line into the OP:

quote:

Also, I really have no desire to discuss any particular thread or individual here....the topic is witch hunts.....not specific ones.

I started this thread after I received a personal phone call in my home last night by someone who I am close to in real life who was VERY upset about what was happening on one of these threads and the fallout it is creating for someone in real life. This morning I sat here and read nearly 50 pages of vindictive venomous bullshit on SEVERAL unrelated threads that left me feeling just sick to my stomach that so many people could just blindly jump on these bandwagons without any regard to who they may be hurting. I didn't say anything to the effect of anyone being "immature and grade school" but now that you mention it julia, I think that is a pretty fitting description.

I think that the airing of all of the personal shit that has been shared on these boards lately is downright tacky. I come to the collarme message boards to share thoughts and ideas, find a little humor, maybe learn a new thing or two or just pass time. I do not care to get dirtied by someone else's filth that they don't have the common sense to keep private or by the poisonous venom spewed by one poster to destroy another.

I didn't name names on this thread for a specific reason. That reason was that I wanted to discuss the why's and not the who's. The who's really made little difference to me before I read the threads and to be quite honest they mean even less to me now. I had just as much opportunity to jump in on any of those threads and give my holier than thou view of the half facts and mistruths just like so many others did....and quite frankly, I would have no need to sugar coat it or disguise it under a cloak of righteousness. Your implication that my motivation for beginning this thread was anything close to that is far off the mark.

let the person without sin cast the first stone
or....
cast your stone for no one is without sin.

Two approaches... the first is a rather utophian view.  I just wonder how many of us have never engaged in a witch hunt in one capacity or another.  I wonder how many have not expressed an opinion that is emotionally baised at one time or another.  It appears to be a grand goal that we speak of an issue and without our emotional bais or judgements.  However, I see a contridiction in casting stones and those that cast stones if one wishes to strive for this admirable but utophian view.

I am not prefect.  I am an emotional being.  I have my opinions and judgements.  I cast stones, but I also send flowers.
I loved reading this reply.

To the OP, I think that if in fact we were not emotional creatures expressing our views and experiences as truthfully as we understand them, these boards would look a lot more scientific/generic, and most of what everyone said would be provable with facts (as agreed with by all) or relative rational thought.  Booring!
I don't care for too much drama, but am all for expressing as honestly as possible, even if it exposes one or another's vulnerabilities.    M

I think that often a thread is started by someone who has a genuine concern, or who quite honestly wants information.

Other times, of course, it's just a way of getting in a few good hits on another person.

Unfortunately, it's sometimes hard to know the difference, at least at first.

And since we consider ourselves a community, we thrive on gossip, innuendo, nitpicking, argument, and all those great ways of enjoying each other's foibles.   Sadly, sometimes good people get caught in the crossfire.  It's not fair, but that's the risk of being on sites like this.

Erin,  great topic.   Unfortunately the  "witch hunt" mentality IS  alive and well on both the internet, and in real life. There are times when i've felt my judgement muscle twitch and really have to consciously quell those thoughts.  I try to do so by thinking to myself...that  there are some who  would judge me harshly for my choices, so who am i to judge others for theirs. I'm also a firm believer in trying to treat others as i would like to be treated.

Its funny, i started  reading/posting on this forum because i had grown tired of the witch hunts...petty squabbles, and troll bashing ( who am i to judge  even a troll?...we're all "trolling" for something, be it advice...information...a mate, a simple "no thanks" has yet to fail me)  that i witnessed in chatroom venues.I thought this venue might be a bit different and in many ways it is.

I think Proprietrix made a great point regarding validation, and peoples  natural desire for it.  But, as others have said....for as many validating points they get...they are likely to get an equal number of dissenting views , and should be prepared to take them  into stride.  Dissenting views should not take the form of personal attacks, and if stated non offensively, they should  not be percieved as such.

I generally try to  avoid commenting on threads that become nothing more than mud slinging  "he said/she saids  or any combination thereof.  I'm just not a "drama" person, so i avoid it.  If someone disagrees with my views....does it affect my life in any way?...of course not. Debate is a wonderful thing when done in a reasonable manner. And sometimes...we even learn things from those who disagree with us.

For me...it's  all about Peace...Tranquillity and the pursuit of recreational pain...

There are sevreal threads on the boards currently...and there have been several in the past, that seem to amount to little more than witch hunts. These posts are started under the guise of "What do you all think about this topic/scenario?" but once you get a little further into them they are really about a specific person(usually not too difficult to figure out their identity either) and how the OP disagrees with the way that person is living their life.

Can you cite an example?

using my lazy fast reply ability here........
I detest witch hunts and have inadvertantly been sucked into the occasional forum that was disguised as one which only just serves to piss me right off big time and give me a nasty feeling about the person that started it. If two people have an issue with one another then it belongs between them. Whatever is between them is none of mine or anyone else's GD business! If, and only IF a friend of mine sees me headed down a path with a particular individual they feel is not being honest with me I always appreciate them letting me know IN PRIVATE. Even then I will take it with a big grain of salt and dependant upon the individual situation.
The behaviour in discussion is just childish and immature. If anyone ever catches ME doing it feel free to openly call me on it, I will deserve it.

Actually I can cite quite a few but I won't because they are blatantly obvious. Once again though I will reiterate...the point of this thread is not to discuss any one of them in particular....if that occurs then this thread only contributes to them and that is not something that I personally have any desire to be a part of. If that were the case I would simply jump on the bandwagons of the other threads. The point of this thread is to discuss why people do this and why other people get sucked in. It is also an opportunity, as some on this thread have done, to express your personal feelings about the practice of starting a witch hunt or feeding into it.

Why would someone get so upset on what's going on in the online forums?  Yeah it's childish, it's immature, it's crap on the walls.  So?

I adore hearing about the background drama going on- the digs people take, the alliances they make, the "standing up fors" and "just happens to bring up this topic now.."

It's fascinating human behavior.

It's also part of a pattern.  Early springtime is usually when boards see a large influx of novices.  After a few months, the drama that this creates comes to a boil and spills out.  Then things will calm down to normal for awhile.

In the "dom with mom and daughter" thread I thought the actual participants did a much worse job than myself, Pandora, and a few others did of making the case and keeping things within perspective.  Generally, the people involved in the drama are JUST as bad as the ones who try and "defend" against the drama.

Because the people who are secure ARE simply secure.  It's the ones who aren't secure who feel a need to call people to the floor- on either side of the issue.

Yes.  Thats why I assumed this was a technical issue on this site, rather than a personal type thing where someone is messing with a member.

Upset? Oh I'm not even a little upset. It takes much more to upset me. I find it sad that some have to grind their personal axes in such a fashion. I find it sad that some of this has spilled offline in at least one instance that I know of and has caused some problems for someone in their "offline" life.

Adore? Nope, I can't adore something that has the sole intent of hurting people.

Nope actually I did understand that Chaingang was joking...but I responded the way I did because I wasn't sure that others would and I didn't want everyone going there. Oh well....I tried. Guess I should have clarified....my apologies to you MD and also to Chaingang.
