CANADA: A not so subtle agenda: Harper cuts $5 million from the Office for Status of Women in Canada and today declares a $5 million-a-year Religious Freedom Office.

CANADA: A not so subtle agenda...

In Egypt, tens of thousands of Coptic Christians -- who make up 10 per cent of the population -- have fled the country. The so-called Arab Spring has not been good news for them. In October, 27 people died when security forces opened fire on a crowd of peaceful demonstrators who had gathered to protest against church burnings...

In Pakistan, Asia Bibi, a Christian mother sentenced to death for blasphemy... was sentenced after drinking water from a well reserved for Muslims, and for allegedly making derogatory remarks about Mohammed... Shahbaz Bhatti, a Christian cabinet minister who had attempted to defend her, was assassinated last March, shortly after predicting his own death...

In Indonesia... Mobs of Muslims have burned and ransacked churches, and rights groups report that violence against religious minorities has escalated...

In Iraq, two-thirds of the pre-war Christian population has fled the country...

You can say what you like about the Harper government’s plan to launch an Office of Religious Freedom as part of its foreign policy. You can say that it’s naive, or dumb, or a blatant effort to appeal to the domestic religious base. But you can’t say the issue doesn’t matter.

Canada loves to stick their nose into other people's business. In fact, we do it on an individual basis like it's going out of style.

Imposing our moral stance on others for the sake of making the world more like Canada does not impress me in the least.

Taking money from the Office for Status of Women also doesn't bother me because here's another things Canadians do. We jump hard on a bandwagon and then ride it well past the line of equality, until things get as messed up as they can be. Women do deserve equal rights and they also don't deserve to be targets for abuse. That line is crossed when a woman can threaten to accuse a man as legitimate blackmail, because she will be taken seriously for her gender. I've seen that happen a LOT. That's when we get out of equality and overextend for its own sake. Heck, that's the type of thing in my day that men were told they were responsible for because of the gender they were born with (whether they personally did it or not).

Can you tell I'm in the camp that supports equality, and does not believe feminism is a legitimate methodology to obtain it?

Wait a sec, Harper isn't that the same guy a certain poster around here used to cite as evidence that electing evangelicals was a non issue because they would keep their faith to themselves?

LOL yep!!!
Harper and Baird are religious conservatives.
I dont feel the need to say anything more ...beyond "The plans for the office, with a projected budget half as big as its U.S. counterpart, has been criticized by some as an attempt to appeal to religious conservatives in Canada" is an understatement

is him in all his glory*with requisite tims coffee.
And no timbits!!!

With regard to the actual topic, sorry MM.
The money is going out of country, While women fair better in canada as a whole, there are still glaring holes in immigrant and certainly native womens issues.
That he takes from one to start another, pisses me off, but I didnt vote for him, and never would, it is expected he is going to do what he can to pander to his base.

(That kinda looks like me, Lucy. From the neck down. No, not the dog.)

You're absolutely right about the rights of immigrant women. Until you obtain citizenship, you're a "non-person", something I've heard used by the government on more than one occasion whee immigration is concerned. But then that's been done to men as well, I'm sure...interesting to note though that my only personal encounters have involved women.

For Canada, the US or any other country to try to force any of those countries to equality is hypocritical while we here in the western hemisphere (at least as far as the US is concerned) seems to be going backward.

Lets start cleaning house first then worry about the rest of the world.
