@FightDirector: You did the right thing by walking away. As disgusting as it is, she has the right to say what she wants, and you served to preserve that right. That she can't see past her partisanship and pain, is sad. She must have lost a lot and can't get through it yet. I am sorry you experienced that. Memorial Day, to me, is a day we set aside to specifically remember those who gave their all for our Country. We honor them and simply take a moment to thank them in our own special way. I would love to hear about a politician's activities on Memorial Day. But, I would love for the first news report to be a month after it happens. The pol did something great, and didn't call attention to it and didn't make it a photo op. That would be incredible.

Somewhere Memorial Day was co-opted to honor the living as well as the dead, and Veteran's Day has fallen by the wayside.

I agree, it comes each year and less people veterans or not can even observe it. Today I am honouring a veteran of a foreign war. A wonderful young man, husband of a few years, father of a 2 year old little girl and 6 month old little boy. He is still actively serving for as long as his health will allow. Just a few months ago he was diagnosed with ALS. When his daughter and son are adults, they will likely not even remember him. He is going to die a very unpleasant death. When Troy was diagnosed, he and his wife, with the help of family and friends, were in process of building a new house for their new life together. It is on a very steep hill with 4 levels. A house he can no longer navigate safely. He bears the bruises, scars and scabs, of many falls. A house that cannot be sold as it is yet unfinished. A house he is a financial prisoner to and needs to get out of. His wife, while trying to care for two small children and now, more and more, her husband, is also finishing her education. Which she will need as a single parent, in the years to come. I've had the honour of knowing these two young people and it breaks my heart to see the rapid physical decline in a handsome strong young man, the visible tolls the stress is already taking on his wife. To know that their children will not know their father except through photos, videos and stories. We are working hard to raise enough money to get this young family into a single level house where this war veteran can spend the rest of his life, more comfortably. Enjoying the few years he has left, with his beautiful wife and children. ALS is a horrible disease. The numbers of our young soldiers that have served in the Persian Gulf that are being diagnosed with this disease is a considerably higher percentage than the general population. There is no cure for ALS. We, as civilians, can only support these young soldiers, and their families, to make the time they do have as easy for them as possible. It is the very LEAST we can do for their ultimate sacrifice. If any patriotic civilians want to put their money where their mouth is, I will gladly find out how they can contribute to this young soldier's family.

But, understand this: I will always believe that inside, everyone is good and will act that way unless there is a reason they aren't. Before condemning someone over his/her actions, it might be best to figure out what is the root cause of those actions. Or, at least, walk away, assuming the anger that was hurled your way was not personal to you and it was just that you were there. at that moment in time. I do however feel obligated to apologize about using the Occupy Movement as an example of our differences. That was completely wrongly held up. You in fact have been rather fair to the movement. I want to thank you for helping support that Marine, but I have no standing to thank you for that. Fuck it. I'm doing it anyway. Thank you for standing behind a veteran and working to help. Just a little explanation for you, DesideriScuri. Sternskipper has some sort of very conflicted fixation on me. He blocks my posts, but is apparently compelled to reply anyway. (At least he stopped serial viewing my profile.) I have no idea if Fightdirecto acted with decency in the cemetery, when the encounter occurred. I see what he posts here, and I find a bit of cosmic symmetry in this woman coming to him for her outburst. Being familiar with his posts and posting style, I suspect the story may contain some flamboyant exaggeration, as well. I deal with angry, sometimes crazy, people on a daily basis, and if there is a reasonable foundation underneath what is showing, I need to try and find it. It's pretty obvious where to start looking, under the circumstances described.
