Okay. It's my favorite time of day. Prime time on MSNBC and sure enough here is the most Reverend Al Sharpton standing there blaming today's extremely bad employment figures on the Republicans for not passing the Obama Jobs Bill last fall. Oh yes, if only the Obama job bill was not stopped by the evil Republicans then we would be (according to Rev. Al Sharpton) one percent better.

I was enthralled. I googled the jobs bill to see what was the hold up and I saw why it was not passed. It was not passed because it increased corporate taxes and regulations under the guise of a "jobs bill". Of course, clamping down on business is kinda foolish when you are trying to encourage business, I thought.

I like the title. It is the "Jobs Bill" or "American Jobs Act", instead of "The American Corporate Tax Increase Act". Nice.

So, why does Al Sharpton ignore facts and make up something like this? Is he? Read the jobs bill and comment please. I could be wrong. It could happen. Really.

A side note.

I was wrong.

I think I was wrong about why I watch MSNBC. It's not to see how they are melting down. Oh no. I watch to see how creative they can be and they are very. My hat is off to them. They do their job very well. They spin beautifully, they focus on what they need to and ignore what they need to and shout down any guest who answers in a way that runs counter to the agenda. It's a beautiful thing. Fiction in the form of a news program. Then, on weekends they take a couple of days off and play documentaries about jails and crazy things caught on film. I've not figured out the relationship to that weekend lineup to the news programs. But there might be.

I could be wrong.

As the name might suggest, MSNBC maintains a web presence.

As for "news," nothing on television has fuck to do with the "news" anymore. It hasn't for years.

The White House provided a fact sheet which summarizes the key provisions of the $447 billion bill.[/link]Some of its elements include:
  1. Cutting and suspending $245 billion worth of payroll taxes for qualifying employers and 160 million medium to low income employees.
  2. Spending $62 billion for a Pathways Back to Work Program for expanding opportunities for low-income youth and adults.
    1. $49 billion - Extending [link=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unemployment_insurance]unemployment benefits for up to 6 million long-term beneficiaries.
    2. $8 billion - Jobs tax credit for the long term unemployed.
    3. $5 billion - Pathways back to work fund.[15]

  3. Spending $50 billion on both new & pre-existing infrastructure projects.
  4. Spending $35 billion in additional funding to protect the jobs of teachers, police officers, and firefighters
  5. Spending $30 billion to modernize at least 35,000 public schools and community colleges.
  6. Spending $15 billion on a program that would hire construction workers to help rehabilitate and refurbishing hundreds of thousands of foreclosed homes and businesses.
  7. Creating the National Infrastructure Bank (capitalized with $10 billion), originally proposed in 2007, to help fund infrastructure via private and public capital.
  8. Creating a nationwide, interoperable wireless network for public safety, while expanding accessibility to high-speed wireless services.
  9. Creating additional regulations on businesses who discriminate against hiring those who are long-term unemployed.
  10. Loosening regulations on small businesses that wish to raise capital, including through crowdfunding, while retaining investor protections.
In total the legislation includes $253 billion in tax credits (56.6%) and $194 billion in spending and extension of unemployment benefits (43.4%).
I do not see how anybody can support this (Republican or Democrat). Some parts of it perhaps.  National Infrastructure Bank idea may work as the existing banking system is not reliable any more. As a whole it does not change the jobless situation significantly, and it is just another spending/National debt increase program. I do not see partisan politics here. Obama administration does not understand (or pretends not to understand) the structural problems the economy has. American companies create massively jobs in other parts of the world. The US Government gives taxpayer money to train people in South Asia and to help companies to outsource (example: GM bailout money).

1. The economy sucks.
2. Sharpton blamed the Republicans for killing Obama's job bill last year.
3. Arturas is channeling Richard Epstein, of the evidently-libertarian Hoover Institute, who had all kinds of weird complaints about the bill. Among them:

A. Epstein states that a Buy America provision for materials used in public works will ensure crap quality and high price. He asserts that buying material from overseas is in the best interests of the country.
B. He states that the Buy American provision can be overruled, and oddly criticizes that as well, playing both sides.
C. He complains that the bill refuses to pay minimum wage to workers on public works projects.
D. He criticizes the fact that the tax breaks given to companies that hire are temporary in nature. Epstein explains it as Obama doesn't like companies and their feelings could get hurt (corporations are people, right?) by his bad views. He correctly states that short term means will not produce an appreciable effect, but omits that if nobody takes advantage of the tax breaks, it has no effect and costs nothing. Not the best outcome, but far from the worst.
E. He claims that money should not be given to schools because they're not spending well the money they currently have. I tend to agree with that, except every government entity is subject to the same charge.

IMO the bill would help but not as much as Sharpton claimed. I have no idea why the GOP blocked it except that it came from Obama - they must have anticipated getting blamed as job-killers when they blocked it.

Skipper, not accurate facts as much as critical review. Arturas simply presented his opinion and then linked to a critique of the jobs bill, which supported his opinion. He did not assess the opinion piece he linked to, which IMO is a mix of semivalid points, complete hogwash, and baseless statements.

To be fair, Sharpton's statement about a 1% improvement in the unemployment rate is pretty baseless as well, as is my assessment that the impact would not be that great.
