Lashra -> Osteoarthritis (6/7/2006 5:00:34 AM)

I was just curious if anyone had osteoarthritis and how they deal with it. I was just diagnosed yesterday and its mainly in my spine. I'm taking therapy, exercises and hot/warm compresses as a starting treatment.
Im worried about how this may effect my BDSM fun as I am the Dominant. Are there any precautions I should take?

i also have it - in my spine and elsewhere, but also mainly the spine. i have other spinal problems, too, but the arthritis is what is supposed to cause most of the pain...

physical therapy is great for strengthening. massage or craniosacral work i've found are both good for pain relief. i've gone completely towards craniosacral work and find it helps to some extent, and sometimes has longer-lasting effects than massage. when i was in physical therapy, i was told i couldn't do a lot of regular exercises (such as certain kinds of ab or strength training exercises) because of my back...this was probably due to my other back problems, but i think that it would be good just to be careful what kind of regular exercise you are doing anyway, because you don't want anything to make things worse or put stress on it! i also find that breathing and relaxation exercises help somewhat because i have a lot of tension in my back, emotional and stress related, that aggravates the pain quite a bit. any tension can easily make things worse. i have had acupuncture in the past, and found it helped in the short term (like massage) to relieve some of the inflammation.

that's pretty much all i know...i hope those suggestions help a bit :) right now due to financial reasons i'm not pursuing further methods of treatment, but i would love to hear about what other types of treatment you do end up doing, and how it works out for you! :) best of luck.

i do not have osteo arthritis but have been struggling with rheumatoid arthritis for years now.  Certain days it does affect me but others are OK.  i recently started taking royal jelly it is an over the counter medication which has helped me dramatically.  My problems are mainly my hips and knees and my hands.  i have recently been told that yoga is a great exercise for anyone with any type of arthritis.  Does it affect my relationship, only on the really bad days or if i forget to take my meds.  i do not take prescription meds for they would cost me over 400 dollars a month but i do take glucosamine chondroitin, ibuprofen, and royal jelly.  Hope that helps

I have had rheumatoid arthritis since i was about 17, you learn to live with. When i have been in a flare and just had to race or work those Thermacare patches helped a lot. They come shaped to fit about any body part and stay warm for 8 hours. On a side note; if your meds are too expensive for you contact the manufacture, many offer precsription assistance or even free meds to qualified applicants.

spectreandnectre -> RE: Osteoarthritis (6/7/2006 6:58:03 AM)

thank you for that bit of info i appreciate it.  i only have major problems when i get my flareups so its not a major issue unless i fall behind on meds.  A doctor friend of mine set me up with the meds that i do take and they do work if i take them the way he tells me too.  i will be getting insurance here soon through the new job so i am not as concerned about that portion but i am currently working toward contacting the manufacturers.  Thanks again

OhBeMyMind -> RE: Osteoarthritis (6/7/2006 7:18:22 AM)

spectreandnectre, Be sure you understand the insurance before you get your hopes up, I only say so because a friend of mine is currently battling their insurance due to pre existing conditions before the insurance went into effect, and insurance is not wanting to cover one condition that was pre existing.  Much luck to you there!

spectreandnectre -> RE: Osteoarthritis (6/7/2006 7:20:46 AM)

thanks for that i will look into that

diamonddreamlove -> RE: Osteoarthritis (6/7/2006 7:29:18 AM)

i also have spinal osteoarthritis and in assorted other areas compounded by spinal stenosis in the same area.  i took spinal cortizone shots 3 in 60 days helped a lot got me back up and moving.  am allergic to asprin so can't take the usual meds and dr gives narcotics to help which i rarely take.  i also horseback ride and while i get still am finding that it is quite contrary to my drs thoughts very therapeutic.  i also use a neruomuscular massage therapist when i start having a lot of trouble.  so far so good and it does stop me as a sub from having certain bondage positions used but can adapt that readily enough.  main thing is have fun and if it hurts too much as a Dominant stop lol as a sub decide how much is too much and go from there.  is a long road with this and sometimes the pain will be great enough to slow You down just go with what feels best for You and i think You will be fine.  good luck i hate the illness but perhaps and a better person for it.  hope so anyway

I really sympathize with you.  There are varying degrees of rheumatoid arthritis, as I am sure you are aware of.  My mother passed away 2 1/2 years ago due to complications related to rheumatoid arthritis, her condition was very extreme.  I was her main care giver for a long time.  Just seeing what she went through, I am especially sympathetic to anyone who has form/type/degree of rheumatoid arthritis.

doctor informed me that for my age my rheumatoid arthritis is extreme made worse by undiagnosed lyme disease that also did some damage to the joints.  As much as it is an issue (my knees get bad) and anyone can understand how that can sometimes be a problem here, i cope very well.

heartfeltsub -> RE: Osteoarthritis (6/7/2006 7:43:30 AM)

my mother has osteoaarthritis and swears that taking glucosomine chrondrotin has been very helpful for reducing the pain and stiffness of her knees and hips.

Lashra -> RE: Osteoarthritis (6/7/2006 7:49:17 AM)

A friend of mine who is a slave has had it since she was very young. She too recommends the glucosamine, flax seed and licorice root. So I'm off to the health food store to check those out today and give them a try. I've been taking lots of Aleve which works for the pain, but Id rather not have to take that every day if something else could help.

Thanks for the replies!

During the course of my mother's disease, I was made aware of bee sting therapy for rheumatoid arthritis, but at such point it was suggested that her condition was too severe to waste on that particular therapy.  Maybe something to look into.

spectreandnectre -> RE: Osteoarthritis (6/7/2006 11:45:59 AM)

the bee sting therapy is actually the equivalent of the royal jelly that i just started and it does work-don't get me wrong some days nothing works totally others you get lucky but it does take the edge off sometimes

spectreandnectre -> RE: Osteoarthritis (6/7/2006 11:47:09 AM)

before i get slammed its not the same but it is the same principle.

GrizzlyBear -> RE: Osteoarthritis (6/10/2006 10:43:14 PM)

Just felt a need to add that there is a huge difference between osteoarthritis (which I have in several joints) and rheumatoid arthritis.  Osteoarthritis is a disease of aging or injury, caused by the deterioration of cartilage in the joints and the eventual wearing down of bone and injury to the joint capsule as a result.  Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease, where the body's immune system actually attacks the joints.  Treatments are entirely different.

THAT'S IT IN A NUTSHELL!

Yup, that's why I've kept quiet about Libby's Embrel.  It works wonderfully on her rheumatoid arthritis but I have no idea if it would do anything for osteoarthritis and $1200 a month is a little steep for just an off chance of relief.

reticence -> RE: Osteoarthritis (6/11/2006 9:42:53 AM)

If  I may ask,  how many times per week does Libby use Embril?    I take it once a week and I also take methotrexate and prednisone.  My doc has suggested I move it up to twice a week and perhaps I could cut back on the prednisone.  Just wondering if Libby has any experience with these other drugs and how she achieved the wonderful results.  I admit I am much better, but still feel really bad more days than not.

I understand if this is too personal and you would prefer not to answer.  If that is the case, please accept my apology.

Thank you,
Reticence

JohnWarren -> RE: Osteoarthritis (6/11/2006 9:51:10 AM)

She injects twice a week.  We don't know why it works but it has worked better than anything else she's tried.
