In advertising they would say both brands are struggling to remain relevant.
It's a twisted quid pro quo in many ways.

On facebook there was a huge thing with Ellen and Million Moms. Ellen's "like" reached over a hundred thousand. The million mom's page didn't even have close to a thousand members. So it was kind of a landslide, as far as facebook goes. I think it brought plenty of business to JCP. Haven't see the two dad commercial yet though. I'm all about values and such, but I am also about letting people be who they choose( or don't choose) to be. There are plenty of kids in the country who have the love of no one, so if two men decide to show love to one child, I'm for that.

By the way, this is the first time I have ever posted in P&R, simply because I am not caught up on current events enough to voice an opinion. But this is one I knew about, so there. Just My [sm=2cents.gif]

Penney's may indeed go bust but it won't be because of these outraged moms boycotting or because they did a ad campaign with Ellen

You confuse said "million moms" (or whatever) and their "boycott" with the RESULT of the PR generated by this, and the apparent hit to JC Penney's sales/stock price.  It doesn't matter if said "million moms" (I doubt there are actually a million of them) shop there or not.  The topic generates PR, any anyone (i.e., doesn't have to be part of said 'million mom' group) can decide whether to shop there or not.  From the stock price and first quarter sales, JC Penny's CEO's emphasis on this particular issue seems to be FAILING.  Long term?!!  Who knows... but the initial numbers don't look good.

quote:

Could this be a cynical attempt on Penney's part to get free publicity? ... Uh, yes.

That's what I'd stated... and believe.

quote:

Penney's did marketing research before they put this out.

So did Coke when they introduced "New Coke" many years ago -- and it flopped!!!

Research is only as accurate as it's methodology.

quote:

I in no way think having Ellen do this campaign has hurt their business at all.

Dunno... just going by the "numbers" and the "stock price", this DOES appear to be hurting.  But again, it's only been a quarter -- the long term will tell a better story... and their CEO has stated he expected sales to drop within the first year.

quote:

if I were in retail I'd be very eager to pitch to upscale gay dads

The allure of that segment has less to do with "upscale" and more to do with those consumers having more disposable income.

lol -- you guys realize retail stores have an annual cycle, right? Summer ain't the hot season.

[:D] LOL... you realize FIRST QUARTER is NOT part of the "Summer" retail cycle, right?!! [8|]

1)  I personally think all this is a means to simply gain PUBLICITY on JC Penney's part

*gasp*

They ran an ad campaign to gain publicity...

*GASP*... that's exactly what I'd stated -- have you always been puzzled by the COMPLETELY OBVIOUS?!! [:D] lol

You do realize that "Facebook" is about as accurate a predicter of success as placing one's bets on which direction a dung beatle faces on Saturday -- where... you know... actual/audited first quarter sales losses and a plummeting stock price holds more credibility, right?!! [8|]

quote:

I think it brought plenty of business to JCP.

You can "think" that... but then, you'd be completely ignoring the sales and stock losses.

*Note:  Once again, their CEO has stated he feels sales will be lower the first year, and picking up thereafter.  Time will tell.

I realize trying to associate a year's sales with a single separate issue is pretty silly and self-serving.

You "realize" that NOBODY has been so "silly" and "self-serving" to have (i) addressed a "year's" worth of sales, or (ii) incorrectly confusing the First Quarter with the "Summer" retail cycle BESIDES YOU, right?!! [8|]

You do realize that if it is summer now,it was summer twelve months ago?
And that it's down some 30% from, uh, twelve moths ago?

Genius, MM.

One Million Moms and the department-store chain are locking horns again

Just a few months after anti-gay group One Million Moms launched a campaign to remove Ellen DeGeneres as JCPenney’s spokesperson because of her sexual orientation, the group is boycotting the department store over a new ad featuring a same-sex couple. The Father’s Day ad shows real-life dads Todd Koch and Cooper Smith playing with their children, Claire and Mason. The ad reads:

“First Pals: What makes Dad so cool? He’s the swim coach, tent maker, best friend, bike fixer and hug giver — all rolled into one. Or two.”

One Million Moms, part of the American Family Association, complained that JCPenney was “continuing on the same path of promoting sin” with this new ad, and recommended their supporters write “Refused … Return to sender” on their JCPenney catalog when it arrives. They also advised members to close their JCPenney accounts and talk to their local-store manager about their concerns.

“It is obvious that JCP would rather take sides than remain neutral in the culture war. JCP will hear from the other side so they need to hear from us as well. Our persistence will pay off! We must remain diligent and stand up for Biblical values and truth.”

The last time One Million Moms and JCPenney locked horns, the store responded by standing behind its partnership with DeGeneres, stating that “Ellen represents the values of our company” — and with this kind of proequality advertising, JCPenney is “continuing to reinforce its progressive values.” It’s not the first fight for either of them; in February, JCPenney distributed a Mother’s Day ad featuring two lesbian parents and their daughters; One Million Moms also took a stance against Urban Outfitters after the store featured two women kissing in its catalog in April.

I think it would have been well advised that they didn't use the phrase "tent maker" when describing two Dad's.
