Lockit -> New Apple Maps and Google trying to match (6/14/2012 9:53:04 AM)

I cannot find a link yet, but... Apple has designed a new app that Google is trying to match. This app will enhance the maps and satalight apps that we already have access to. Not only can we look at a picture of someone's house, but we can see it in real time with these apps. You want directions, it is wonderful. You want to see a property advertised for sale? Well... get the address and you can go see the neighborhood and if you really want to go check out the property. How about, now being able to go real time to see the property? You can actually see exactly what is going on. If the owner is mowing the lawn, sitting on the porch picking his nose or hey... the curtains are open, can we get a look inside the house?

We don't know how well these apps will work and from what angles we would be able to see... but this has the potential to be invasive in a manner that I personally find objectionable.

Ever met someone online... like many of us do here and you talk by email or messenger and then maybe move to the phone. The little details you give about your life.. things you wouldn't think problematic... become problematic because that person... really a stranger to you, can now figure out by putting one fact with another... where you might live. With this app, they can not only find you, but monitor you.

Someone doesn't need a warrant. No, they will just use their app and monitor your house. All legal unless we ask our ever quick at getting things done, leaders... to stop this invasion into our personal privacy. No longer will it mean cameras on the streets of our cities... but actual real time viewing of you and your residence.

Some will say it will never happen. Some will say they can already do this or will soon, its progress. Don't do anything bad and it won't be a problem. Watch what you say in public or to strangers. I get all that. But, what I get and hear more is... I don't care to share everything I do with the world and don't feel I should hide behind closed doors when I might want to take a private moment with my lover in my secluded... or I thought secluded back yard.

What do you think about this new app and the use of it? How do we stop progress or do we not care?

I thought google used to give satelight images in real time.. i dunno since i never used it that far back. I just remember reading about people complaining about invasion of privacy etc.. but it depends the country you are in also.. the US privacy laws are just for show, imo, they are pretty pee poor..

But i doubt that these new real time images will give enough of an angle to look inside someones curtains.. which is why google had people driving around taking images from the street in the first place..

i also doubt that someone could watch you from this app.. you would have to give them your address first off and trust them enough to do that.. even then what would they see? your neighbor parking in front of your house? if you are worried about someone taking images of private times with lovers in the back yard.. that is what celebs have been dealing with for a long time and they havent been able to stop those paparazzis and their long mega lense cameras..

Just wait until the mini drones buzzing all around you becomes as common an occurance as video cameras when you go to a commerical area.. and those drones are cheap enough now that people (& police forces) are starting to buy them..

eta- i will likely still use google earth on my computer (since i have it anyway) and since it does give me street view of houses and areas i might be interested in..

Neither Google nor Apple has any such app in the works and it is extremely unlikely they will ever gain access to the sorts of spy sats that would be needed to produce real time images at a low enough scale to really impinge on anyones privacy.

I just saw a report on CNN, that was on this new app. So far they don't have a link to the report, but I saw it. Like I said, I don't know how well it will work, but they are making the app.

You saw some terribly garbled news report on something. Real time sattelite vies at any sort of reasonable resolution would require access to very highly classified spy sats.

Well, you would know far more about that than I would! I'm pretty green when it comes to technology! [:D]

Its just part of the war between Apple & Google.. Steve Jobs had a hate on for Google and Apple is trying to develop & use their own technology/apps on their iphones and ipads to kick Google to the curb and put a dent in Google's earnings..

I just see it as Pepsi being replaced by Coke, kwim? [:D]

The only even sort of related news I can find is that Apple is dumping the google maps app from IOS.

Steve Jobs had a hate on for everybody else who made computer software, even if it didn't run on Macs or his cutesy little gimcrack iphone toys.

Apple *is* working on a real time *traffic* view--so you can see and avoid traffic jams, for instance.

The 3D stuff is cool, but not real time.

"real time" traffic won't actually show you the cars stopped in a traffic jam it will just highlight zones where traffic is stopped/slowed.

hot4bondage -> RE: New Apple Maps and Google trying to match (6/15/2012 7:05:56 AM)

Yep. It won't even have "street view" in the first release. What they might add in future updates is anybody's guess, though.

Musicmystery -> RE: New Apple Maps and Google trying to match (6/15/2012 7:23:20 AM)

Reality is, unless they launch their own satellites (which is possible), they are dependent on what the government will allow them to use/show.
