My mother's back hurt and I suggested she take ibuprofen to which she responded, "My brother said it causes hearing loss." I've found the study but am not convinced that correlation = causation. I could be biased because I take it, though. Thoughts?

I have had to take 800 mg sometimes when I had some bad ass shoulder pain. Because of how my doctor is, I just really believe that if she thought there was any merit to that claim, she would have mentioned it to me.

I have never heard of it being ototoxic. Ibruprofen though is usually only safe to take short term. If your Mum needs longer term analgesia, she'd be better off talking to her doctor.

The main side effects I have seen are asthma, bleeding, gastric ulcers.

They're talking about long term usage in males under 50. She's over 50 and female and talking about short term use.

However, she should consider going to a sports chiropractor, and getting short term help and a list of exercises to do in the future.

What she really needs is to learn how to pace herself. She chronically overdoes it. She has two speeds - full on and collapsed. She's maintaining a big house and gardens. My brother and I help out when and where we can, but...

I'm heading over there for the duration of the heat wave.

Any NSAID can cause ototoxicity--heck even unscrupulous use of diuretics such as Lasix can cause ototoxicity.....if your mother is having concerns about NSAID use, then it is best to consult her physician--he should be completely aware of her past medical history. if you lack the ability to interpret the data in the study then you shouldnt rely on the study to make any sort of decision. lJust about every published study has some degree of bias--its takes a very skilled individual to be able to interpret data and make conclusions.....are you familiar with the significance of a p value? null hypothesis? differentiate between a type I and type II error? a person needs to have the scientific basis/education to be able to discern when facts become skewed and misinterpreted

I can't seem to download the full JAMA on my net book but I'll take a look at it when I get home....and I can run it by some of my colleagues who are physicians to get their take.

Interesting.... in terms of your mother, it's hard to say. The study (based on just the JAMA synopsis) is that the study was performed solely on men, and the research seems to be focused on younger men under 50.

I find this really concerning--given the amount of ibuprofen I've had to take lately for my pain--perhaps I need to just deal with it and forego the pain killers
