There have been some discussions about what the impact would have been, if guns were freely available, and owned by the minorities - particularly Jewish - who were annihilated during the Holocaust.
Gun control was one of the Nazis's pre-Holocaust actions, to take them away from civilians, especially the Jewish population.

Food for thought. I'm not sure I agree completely.
If people always get the government that they deserve, then we can conclude that authoritarian forms of government are historically the type of government we do indeed "deserve". "Democracy" and "Human rights" are a relatively new additions to mankind's repertoire of political governance.
In reality, I think most people would just rather be left alone, and leave other people alone. That is the default of most people I know. It is the outliers (on both sides of the equation) who are "committed" enough to wish to be involved in having a say over how other people live their lives. It generally takes a lot to get the general, harmless majority of the population energized enough to rip a society or nation apart, and institute a new structure.
And, if they aren't careful, or aware, then the very people who you do not want to be in charge, end up in charge, and it starts all over again.
The beauty of the American system is that it has worked as long as it has. But I would still classify it as "experimental" in the long history of human endeavors.
