I think there are different styles for chatting, discussing on message boards and what one puts into a profile. A profile is the first thing most people look at - it's your one chance to make a good impression, if that's what you're going for. Anyone who has interacted to any degree online has varying levels of formality with the tools presented. While I certainly do use many of the acronyms, I'm not huge on txtspk even in phone texts - never liked them, think many are more trouble than they're worth and becoming increasingly obsolete with the preponderance of smart phones and laptops. When you write a profile, you can take as long as you wish to present yourself to your audience. If you choose to sound like a Neanderthal, include cock shots, abuse punctuation, ignore grammar, forget you have a shift key, present a wall of text/demands, have *no* profile, or do/NOT do anything else which could help you put your best foot forward, then it is what it is and peoples' reactions are what *they* are. I don't jump at every misspelling, especially in less formal settings such as message boards/chats - if it's understandable, there's no reason to worry about fixing every typo in deference to the flow of conversation. Don't you think telling people it's classist to care about grammar is as classist as them saying it bugs? In the long run, it usually isn't even about the grammar [unless it's absolutely abysmal], it's about the content, which only adds to the impression for better or worse. You can't suspend feelings and, in a written medium, that's all we have to base our initial opinions upon. I will say, if we get far enough into a discussion for me to ask for a picture, the first one I see had better be from ABOVE the belt line or I will consider you just another wanker. My own profile is very sparse currently and has recently had some added negative comments I have always avoided including [I'm more for the positive profile], but I'm not trolling women for their attention, either. ;)
