Happy 236th Birthday America!
****Happy 4th of July****

[sm=candles.gif] [sm=candles.gif] [sm=candles.gif] [sm=candles.gif]

Is it possible to put partisan bullshit "away", and post what politically oriented news we are thankful for?

I will start.
I am happy that the topic of health care/and lack of coverage is front and center in American politics.
Regardless if President Obama wins or loses, the cow is out of the barn now.
This isssue is front and center, and will be a major issue/cause/concern for at least the next 236 years.

I am happy that despite the many, many, issues I am not thrilled about in this country, I would not have wanted to be born anywhere else.
{I feel this way, most of the time.}

Here are 10 fun 4th of July facts, that many don't know!
4th of July fun facts~

Again Happy 4th of July, kinkster's, and as the late Rodney King asked, "Why can't we all get along?"

Winterapple -> RE: America is 236 Years Old/Happy 4th of July America!! (7/4/2012 1:14:07 AM)

They aren't the sort of candles that go out when
people huff and puff on them.[:)]

The light may flicker sometimes but it
never goes completely out.

Not to be persnickety, but Rodney's quote was, "can we all get along."

Yes, by all means, let's put aside partisanship and all agree that with this ruling from the Supreme Court, individual liberty took it the ass this year.

(Rodney's request was ignored too, y'know)

FR

Some apt (imho) thoughts from Jefferson's first inaugural address:

quote:

Let us, then, fellow-citizens, unite with one heart and one mind. Let us restore to social intercourse that harmony and affection without which liberty and even life itself are but dreary things. And let us reflect that, having banished from our land that religious intolerance under which mankind so long bled and suffered, we have yet gained little if we countenance a political intolerance as despotic, as wicked, and capable of as bitter and bloody persecutions.

. . .

But every difference of opinion is not a difference of principle. We have called by different names brethren of the same principle. We are all Republicans, we are all Federalists.

May God bless America.

Thanks for the "correction", Rich!
At least I was close.
Aw Rich, there must be some "political news" you must be happy about?

The free speech is still working, Mari. I'll celebrate that without any special holiday required.

Sanity -> RE: America is 236 Years Old/Happy 4th of July America!! (7/4/2012 9:18:15 AM)

Not just from the ruling, of course

One can argue that the ruling hinged on Roberts strictly following what he thought was the only correct path according to the law and the constitution

Despite that, the real assault on liberty that we face is the underlying thinking behind that abhorrent legislation, and how prevalent the sort of thinking is that led up to its passing all our checks and balances

Which, the thinking that I refer to is this deranged notion that we should hand over our liberties one slice at a time in exchange for cradle to grave nanny care from our beloved big brother government

Independence as an ideal is a partisan issue in itself dc. The declaration that is the basis for todays holiday sparked a bloody war, and the arguments and battles still rage.

A common misconception is that the holidays name is "the fourth of July"

The holidays name is not the fourth of July. The name of the holiday is Independence day, and our Independence should not only be celebrated by getting drunk and shooting off Chinese fireworks, it should be defended and fought for and advocated for, each and every day. Independence is something precious that not every person on this planet gets to enjoy. The misery that many millions of individuals endure at the hands of their governments is beyond the capability of words to describe, and when one considers the suffering in its full context the though can be very sobering indeed
