There are usually two sides to an argument:

"Groundbreaking science is sometimes a global collaborative effort (CERN, Higgs boson, July 4). It is more often a contact sport—especially when individuals challenge a prevailing paradigm. In 1926 the president of the American Philosophical Society called Wegener’s theory of continental drift “utter damn rot”. Climate science has become just such a contact sport. There is a consensus paradigm represented by 4th IPCC. There are apparent flaws and uncertainties in that consensus. The government-climate complex stifles healthy scientific discourse about them.

Since climate is intrinsically important, this situation reflects deeply on the present practice of science generally, and on its interaction with government policy agendas in many other areas. Grant money flows to consensus research in a closed loop system, as Dr. Paltridge pointed out in his article “Science held hostage in climate debate” recently posted on Climate Etc. The scarier the finding, the more money flows. That incentive reinforces the closed loop. There becomes less to gain, and more to lose, by scientifically challenging the consensus even though portions of it are not backed by replicated observations."

That's like saying there is no "compelling evidence" that you should change the oil in your car. Scientific theory says that the oil will break down and eventually your engine will sieze up but there is no "Compelling Evidence" and all that maintenence is gonna cost money.

Even if AGW is totally hokum, it's a good idea to wean ourselves from fossil fuels as much as possible. That would do 2 things.

1. There will be enough petroleum for civilization as we know it to continue for millenia instead of a century or 2.

2. Those people in the middle east who have been buttfucking us over an oil barrel for the last 60 years can go back to eating dirt and rocks and gleefully killing each other because we won't need their product.

I am all for doing things on a more intelligent and hell of a much more efficient scale. As I have stated on this thread ,we can easily fix every single problem we have energy, food, water, shelter, transportation wise, if we the people so choose to.We just do not have the will power collectively to make it so.Mother nature is gonna do what she is going to do whether we help her along in a good way or a bad way depends entirely on us collectively.

I live what some have termed a green life not completely mind you I am a realist, people need to work,people need to eat, people need to find their own way. I have fought big companies on environmental issues tooth and nail over the years.Some I have fought with and against, the tide can be turned, we can be good stewards of our resources without restricting our living standards or suppression individual personal rights. We just have to want to

I never said the other side was right, either. Also, you used a bad example because there is a TON ... nae, a metric shit ton of compelling evidence about the breakdown of viscosity in motor oil and the damage that "weak/faulty/whatever" lubrication will do to the moving parts.

I liken it to the lack of proof that second hand smoke harms anyone. There's no definitive proof. There's also no definitive proof that it doesn't harm anyone.

I am all for removing ourselves from the Arabian teat. I have been for quite some time.

However, I don't support the idea because of some new religion telling me it's the "only way". I do so because I believe that we should be as independent as possible. Much like one need not follow Christianity or Judaeism to believe that murder is wrong.

Actually we've known about the solar output cycles for decades. Schwabe discovered the sunspot cycle in 1843. All climate models I'm aware of do include solar cycle variables.

You make good points except for the engine oil analogy, I would think there is compelling evidence you will blow your engne.
I'm all for weening ourselves off of fossil fuel but the private sector should be tho one doing it. It's useless for the government to throw money at the problem like 100's of millions squandered on solar panel companies. I would bet serious money that much of that money ended up in some looters private money stash.

I'm against cap and trade and raising taxes on coal consumption and all the rest of it. Plus, as I remember another poster mentioning, developing third world countries need to be on board. If feasible alternate energy sources are eventually developed then it will make sense from them to go to those. With a profit incentive for companies to develop them I think eventually they will come. In the short term we can get away from the middle east buttfucking by extracting our own oil. I'm as unconvinced we can change the weather/climate as I am thinking we can eradicate tornadoes.

The patch of desert around here is full of microclimates, with some pretty wild temperature variations, so I suppose if they relocated the weather station, we might see all sorts of new records pile up, but with the station where it is, the all time high is still a tie on consecutive days in 1961. Nothing like a good summer heat wave to get people talking though.

That said, I grew up in view of a snowcapped mountain, and when I get back home these days, there is less of that snow up there, every time. Look at this thread, or any other though, and see the answers proposed. Turn our entire transportation and energy structure upside down. Have our diets dictated to us. Did I really see some totalitarian douchebag joking that this would be a perfect opportunity to enslave people he disagrees with, and use them as a power source? That was the first half, of the first page

Let's face it many people post the same shit over and over, I don't read a lot of the jackassery.

There are people here that are just so sour and negative, that they will argue with you, if you say tomorrow is Friday the 13th.

I don't have the time or the energy, it's obvious by the people I even bother responding to.

I have no idea what the solutions are, I really don't understand the causes behind a lot of what is going on.

It's a topic worth talking about, as we sit and watch and live with climate changes.

Global warming does exist. It exists because the proof is beyond question.

Now...is it because of us, or is it because of sunspots that travel in 500 year cycles....it's really a moot point (isn't it?)

Who cares?

We can do better, and with 7 billion people, we should.

Who gives a shit if it's a 500 year cycle or if it's because we're contributing to it?

Let's do better.

I think the earthquake over by Japan is having effect on things also. I'm convinced that as I watch the sun set it's now at a point further north over the house to my west. Maybe I need a foil hat, but it's certainly odd. Most likely "W's" fault though.

I don't believe that America is standing idle when it comes to an effort to combat the polutions cited as the problem. But Until the other developed and developing countries are geared to do the same, our efforts are meaningless.

Concurrently the tree-hugger contingent will never be satisfied so I have chosen to disregard their bitching altogether. And if you think I'm giving up pork loin and ribeyes you can kiss my meat eating ass.

You are much confused, Rich. I am not a Conservative, Republican, or right-winger. I am very much a science oriented and educated person who just happens to think there is evidence that casts doubt on the efficacy of CO2 as a cause for Warming. I have shown the ice core anomaly that questions the causality of CO2 on Warming a number of times in these threads. Until you can refute that evidence anything else you might have to say about me personally is irrelevant.
