MstrPBK -> Woodwooker ... or ... Metalsmith Sought (7/13/2012 7:36:41 AM)

Region: Minneapolis /St. Paul, Area

Issue: For over 40 year I have been on crutches. I am probably the last person in this region to use what are known as Canadian Crutches. For that time my crutches have been (I believe) made of maple. This last time I picked up a new pair of crutches and they felt ... different and I THINK the industry moved from Maple to Pine. The feel of these crutches make me a bit uneasy knowing that the durability of pine is lower than Maple.

Work being considered:

Opition A: Having a Maple pair commissioned. This would require specialize skills of lamination and wood forming.
Opition B: Having this pair reinforced metal bands (exteriors). This would require very careful pattern matching and knowledge of metal strengths.

In both cases hardware would have to be sought:
• screws, bolts, and washers
• Leather work (for wrist bands)
• Riveting to attach leather bands

PBK, why are you unable to use the standard aluminum with the sheepswool lined cuffs?

Just curious I guess.  You want what you want.

Loft Strand (aluminum crutches) ... I have been told ... buckle far to often when weight is put on them. I depend on my arms pushing heavily down on my crutches. My lower arms have also been "trained" over the years to expect support to both sides of the arm. Loft Strands have a 'U shape' wrist band; where as Canadian's have a 'full circular' band.

Meaning this politely: It may be hard for a non-crutch user, or even a Loft Strand user, to understand these subtleties in the differences between Canadian and Loft strand crutch designs.

The gentleman above you, on this post, has responded. We're still at preliminary discussion stage.

Incidently we're also looking for a leathersmith as well to re-create (improve?) the arm bands for these crutches as well.

Men of honor? More like men of drama.

Sought and For Sale isn't an area for discussion.
