From Cath Maralit
San Jose, Batangas, Philippines

Last April 7, my brother died at an event illegally sponsored by Phillip Morris Tobacco Corporation. He was 29 years old.

The game Phillip Morris played with my brother's life was this: they encouraged people to drink as many liquor shots as possible in 100 seconds. There was no medic on standby.

When his friends realised he was ill, they tried to ask for help but no immediate assistance has been given to them from the people they were expecting it the most. It was too late -- he was pronounced dead on arrival at the nearby clinic.

A police investigation into my brother's death says that the organisers are guilty of "criminal negligence". Yet the people responsible for his death are still employed, no criminal charges have been laid, and Philip Morris continue to illegally sponsor these events.

I miss my brother every day. His widow will give birth to their first baby in a few months time, and I can't believe that he won't be there with us to celebrate.

Please join me in demanding the organizers are brought behind bars, and Kuya Nino, his widow, and unborn child will be given justice.

Wait a minute....you mean they tied him down and forced those drinks down his throat?

I'm not saying that it isn't tragic nor am I saying that it would not have been wise to have medical staff on site, but the ultimate responsibility in the death is her brother's.

How was the event "illegally sponsored"? Those are the charges they should be brought up on.

I think the illegality was due to not getting the required permits. From the email I received:

I live in the Philippines, and my brother, Kuya Niño, died at a promotional event sponsored by Philip Morris Fortune Tobacco Corp Inc. after organizers incited him to drink as many hard liquor shots as possible in less than two minutes.

The local government did not issue the required permits to the event's organizers, but they held the event anyway -- illegally. There were no medics on standby. My brother's friends begged for help, but the event's organizers didn't provide any. My brother was pronounced dead on arrival at a nearby clinic.

An investigation into my brother's death says that the event organizers are guilty of "criminal negligence." Yet three months later, the people responsible for his death are still employed, no criminal charges have been filed, and Philip Morris continues to illegally sponsor these events.

Hmm. The only link on the web is to "change.org."

No names are mentioned. Not the person complaining. Not the person who died. Not the city that it took place in. Not the prosecutor, the police, or the people that are supposed to have lost their jobs.

Who is it being sent to? "Tobacco Industry and Philippine Government."

I call, "Shenanigans!"

Perhaps it was his sister's first attempt at writing a petition.

The death of Nino Maralit after a liquor drinking contest sponsored by Philip Morris Cigarette

Holy Week is a time for rest and relaxation for most Filipinos. Niño Maralit and three of his friends and co-employees of Tong Hsing Electronics hied off to Peters Inn Resort and Restaurant at White Beach, San Isidro, Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro to unwind from their busy schedules. Niño is a dedicated and loving son and breadwinner to his parents and his newly married wife who was three months pregnant. He deserved this break.

On the dawn of Black Saturday, the vacation turned to a parent's worst nightmare.

Liquor drinking contest on Black Saturday

Around 1:30 AM of April 7, 2012 , Philip Morris Philippines Cigarette sponsored a liquor drinking contest organized by Hwangs Hopewell.

The rules of the contest is to consume as many shots of liquor in a span of 100 seconds. Prizes at stake were a Technomarine Watch for the first prize while the second and third prizes were Blackberry phone. After the contest, Maralit felt dizzy that his co-employees assisted him to rest on a chair.

In a letter to Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Enrique Ona, Jovencio Maralit, the father of Niño related that after an hour, another tourist at the opposite table noticed that Niño’s face and hands turned pale. The father was told about the unfolding tragedy that befell his son. From his pale hands and face, his son felt the urge to vomit but was unable to. Soon he lost consciousness, and greenish liquid were seeping out of his eyes, ears and nose. His then white complexion turned to reddish hue while his stomach bulged. The tourist suggested to bring the victim to a clinic. It was at this point that first aid was administered by some volunteers since there was no medic on standby.

Niño was brought to De Los Reyes Clinic but declared dead on arrival. He was only 29 years old.

His friends reported the case to the Puerto Galera Municipal Police Station but it was only on June 8 that the police released its report and findings.

Investigation and Findings

An autopsy signed by the attending physician Dra. Ma Teresa S. Wycoco, the Municipal Health Officer revealed the cause of death as “Cardio-respiratory arrest secondary to internal bleeding secondary to hemorrhagic pancreatitis”.

The police discovered that the event of Philip Morris organized by Hwangs Hopewell had no clearance/permit from the Office of The Barangay of San Isidro , Puerto Galera. Neither was there a Mayor’s Permit to conduct such activity from the Licensing Office of the Municipality of Puerto Galera. The police report “concluded that the death of Nino Maralit Y Silvestre was brought about by the lapses and negligence on the party of the organizers as evident in the aftermath of the event.”

“As if it weren’t enough that they kill through their very products, cigarette companies take this tragedy to another level by circumventing laws and sponsoring events of a lethal nature,” cites Irene Reyes, Managing Director of HealthJustice Philippines, an internationally-awarded NGO working on public health policy, and country coordinator for surveillance of tobacco advertising, sponsorship and promotion.

“Tobacco companies not only make and promote a deadly product, they also encourage alcoholic binge drinking, which led to this young man’s death. Obviously, these companies are also responsible for the more than 87,000 Filipino tobacco-related deaths each year. To say that this cigarette company is socially irresponsible would be an understatement,” states Project Director Ulysses Dorotheo of the International group South East Asia Tobacco Control.

It was recommended by the Police Inspector Arnold Sapungan Limpiada “that the victim and family be given a decent burial and financial assistance by the organizers. And should the family wishes to file charges in any court of law, this Station is at all times ready to assist in the documentation with the testimonies and pieces of evidence obtained.”

You mentioned he was 29 years old and too stupid not to drink to excess.

Big business advertises, sponsors, anything that will increase their market share. I'll wager they were not the only sponsor.

Sorry for your loss. But how is poisoning himself the fault of a corporation?

Agreed, this said, I find it really shocking that an event like that is allowed, everywhere you get the "drink awareness" campaigns, a company trying to increase their market share by blatantly going against world wide health trends doesn't sound like a sound marketing strategy to me. Additionally anybody dying at such an even is simply bad PR.

However an adult poisoning himself with lots of booze because of a stupid bet - Darwinism at work.
