It appears that some states are refusing to expand Medicaid. At least one state hasn't even began the process of setting up exchanges. Fortunately, the Affordable Care Act allows the government to set up exchanges if states refuse. Unfortunately, states can choose to opt out of Medicaid expansion leaving many extremely poor Americans with no coverage at all. In states that refuse Medicaid expansion, is there a way the government can allow the extremely poor to choose a plan on the exchanges and pay 100% of the premiums without Congressional approval? Is there a way the government can assist them with moving expenses to relocate to a different state? What can be done to resolve this issue without involving the republican controlled House?

That's probably what those states are hoping for. That way they can minimize their outlays for support of the poor and low income earners. By doing things like this they simply show that they fail to meet the definition of a caring society, and prefer to dispose of those who don't meet their standards.

I think states will face a lot of pressure from hospitals to cooperate. They might eventually, but nobody knows how long that will take.

The whole point of declining the ACA, or ObamaTax is to negate it. The only way it works is if the states set up the exchanges to fund it... If enough states decline the program, it chokes on it's own expense. Obama's legal team fucked up, and Robert's reminded conservative governors of that with his defense.

More Theater. In the end, they'll take the money, because the alternatives are comparatively more costly. It is, after all, the plan the Republicans put forth in the 90s.

Instead of going to your states Dept of Medicaid, try going to your Dept of Health and see if they have options for you. Go to the Health Department. [sm=2cents.gif] *Directed to the OP, of course :)

The Supreme Court said it was unconstitutional for the federal government to withdraw funds states already get for existing Medicaid if they refuse to expand Medicaid. Therefore, states have a choice on Medicaid expansion. That has nothing to do with the exchanges. Medicaid and the exchanges are not tied together.

The ruling said the states cannot be punished by having all their Medicaid funding taken away if they do not expand Medicaid. The exchanges are a seperate measure and are completely unaffected by the SCOTUS ruling.
