Lucylastic -> Rupert Murdoch steps down from NI boards (7/21/2012 2:02:13 PM)

Rupert Murdoch has resigned as a director of a string of companies behind The Sun, The Times and The Sunday Times, fuelling expectations that he is preparing to sell the newspaper group.
Companies House filings show that Mr Murdoch stepped down from the boards of the NI Group, Times Newspaper Holdings and News Corp Investments in the UK last week. He also quit a number of News Corp’s US boards, the details of which have yet to be disclosed by the US Securities and Exchange Commission.
News Corporation played down the significance of the resignations as “nothing more than a corporate housecleaning exercise prior to the company split”.
The media giant took a similar line when James Murdoch resigned a string of directorships at News International last November, pouring cold water on suggestions that he was walking away from the UK newspaper arm. He quit as chairman three months later.
News Corporation has already said it will split into two separately listed companies, distancing its embattled newspaper and book publishing interests from its rapidly growing film and television operations, which account for nearly 90pc of News Corp’s $4.2bn (£2.7bn) annual revenues.

Maybe its just a ploy to take the heat off of his financial interests. If he seels, it will be interesting to see the coalitions response.

How old is Rupert? His eighties? Late seventies?
Isn't his mother still alive or recently still kicking?

I think he is pretty much a spent force
and the recent scandal and legal problems
has cast a shadow over his spawn.
I don't believe any of them will be
able to shore up the power he did.

I just want the whole clan out of the
news business, faux or tabloid.
Let them make movies or whatever.

He could never get fully what he deserves
but diminishment of out to any degree
is wounding to megalomaniacs.

And reportedly the third wife has
him completely henpecked.

One thing that the Torygraph piece doesn't mention is that Murdoch junior has no interest in the newspaper arm of NI at all, and the monopolies commission were opposed to it buying up any more UK broadcasting companies even before the current fuss started to blow up. Given that, the fact that they're gearing up to dump the newspapers while trying to put a positive spin on that is hardly surprising, is it?

I read a pice in the "I" newspapaer saying the shareholders had held a meeting and forced the issue. Sounds about right.

I wouldn't be at all surprised. Just wonder if that's as unwelcome a move as you'd expect, or an excuse.

From the report, the shareholders left Murdoch little choice.

Which is the way he'd want it under those circumstances, I'd have thought.

Well it would show news international in a better light, at the very least.

Yep.
