50 Shades of Grey is bad for literature, society, and humanity.

Any fans of it should be ashamed.

The Gideon Bible is bad for literature, society, and humanity.

Any fans of it should be ashamed.

Anybody have a third option?

Why not put a playboy in the room too?

I think we've found a winner.

Why not just stick a Kindle in the room on the bedside table and then people can read whatever the fuck they want. They can attach them like they do the tv remotes.

I stopped reading those obsolete analog books a decade ago. I love my Kindle but considering the price tag and how incredibly few people read for pleasure I just don't see them showing up at the budget inn any time soon.

I might be old fashioned here but I can not stand digital books, I like real books made of real paper that you can feel the weight of in your and and smell the paper and ink of the pages, words on a screen could never replace that in my opinion.

I wish you well

Oh how I hate literature snobs. I have never read the 50 Shades books but how is it bad for literature, society or humanity, I think it is great that people read no matter what it is they are reading and these books are engaging people and that is great. You should be ashamed that you do not accept that others have different literary tastes then yourself.

Now why are this hotel replacing the Bible with the 50 Shades books? Why not just have both and a few other books as well that way people can choose what they would like to read.

I wish you well

lilmissdefiant -> RE: Hotel Replaces Bible With '50 Shades of Grey' (9/13/2012 2:38:33 AM)

I think attacking someone because they like a book is rediculous.
What happened to "Your kink may not be my kink but I respect your opinion" ?

nephandi -> RE: Hotel Replaces Bible With '50 Shades of Grey' (9/13/2012 3:03:53 AM)

I agree I think that people have to be allowed to read or interest themselves in whatever they want, I think the important thing is that people are reading and that it is possessive no matter what folk reads.

I wish you well

I haven't read the book so I can't judge personally but I've seen quite a few people react negatively to 50 shades of grey because they think it misrepresents abuse as BDSM.

But bad writing is not why I find Fifty Shades of Grey to be repulsive. I hate—hate—this book because it conflates BDSM with abuse. Because it features an emotionally abusive man preying upon an insecure young woman and calls it a relationship. Christian Grey is an abuser. He is emotionally unavailable, emotionally abusive, and sexually exploitative. His complete disregard for his partner’s comfort, experience, and emotional well being are contemptible: he gets his pleasure at the expense of his partner.

Have you tried the kindle touch or nook? I ask because reading on an lcd screen kind of sucks but the E-ink displays are nice.

I have tried a kindle but only borrowed one and not tried to read a whole book on it. I want one as there are books that are not published in paper that I want, but I still like paper books better, not that a Kindle is not a good alternative when I go visiting my mother to not having to drag that many books along and such. It is still something about a book you can touch which makes it something special for me. I have not tried a nook.

I wish you well

So they supply a fictional book about an abusive, codependant Dom/sub relationship and then pulled that out and replaced it with 50 Shades of Grey?

I literally did almost spew my coffee everywhere when I read this!

fucktoyprincess -> RE: Hotel Replaces Bible With '50 Shades of Grey' (9/20/2012 5:53:27 PM)

How about just removing the bible and replacing with....nothing.

Although I have to credit this guy for the incredible amount of free publicity he is getting from this stunt. Just another person riding off the the 50 Shades bandwagon. Share the wealth.

Sadly, as a society will not be done with these books anytime soon. I imagine a movie trilogy is already in the works. I guess then he can add the DVDs to the drawer alongside the books. [&:]

I haven't read the book, have no intention of doing so. For the people who do, well, there ya go. Everyone has different tastes and if it was brought up with me, I'd tell them the "real" (I hate that word) deal is a lot different than the book. If I can educate, then good, if someone doesn't want to hear it, that's their decision too.

I also love holding a real book, but at this times it's easier for me to get e-books from my public library than to make my way there. And I can read them from my phone. Handy when I go somewhere, don't have to haul a book and I always have my cell phone with me.

I am going to say that you are correct and wrong in one post:

Digital books are not worth the paper they are printed on. Ignoring the possibility of Amazon deleting or changing the pages from home base (they have done this before) there is nothing like the feel of a 1st edition Mark Twain novel, printed in the 19th century, in your hands. Or, you know, choose your favorite author.

It really is a terrible book. I read it because I read everything and it was popular. Most books, literature snobbery aside, become best-sellers because they strike some chord with readers. "50 Shades of Grey," however, is every bit as bad as people are saying here. Whatever spills from Dan Brown's keyboard this month (hint: if Dan Brown wrote it the Illuminati is involved) is probably better.

Yep; sorry, but it was in Tesco's, so I got it and read - most of it. Bloody awful! He's all 'trousers hanging from his hips' - is that meant to suggest he's slim? Got stacks of cash but never seems to work; huge cock and muscles all over the place. She's just a young twerp who hasn't had any sexual experience at all. Both young and beautiful and it just makes you sick! Mills and Boon porn! I suppose in my day it would have been Mrs Robinson.........

Who here can write a better book and get it published and made into a movie?

I know I have tried little possibility.

As for writing a better book, I already did, and it's published by XCite. I say this with all due modesty, because my Mum could write a better book than 50 Shades, and she's dead; it's fan fiction and reads like it.

As for getting published, it should be a whole lot easier now, because every publishing house is looking for "the next 50 Shades"; same as you couldn't give YA fantasy away before Harry Potter, then suddenly everyone wanted it.

As for a movie, you can try for that when you've sold as many copies as "50". But again, it should be easier now. My publishers are jumping with excitement hoping that their time has come, but I'm afraid not: already being a BDSM publisher won't help, the big distributors will still control the shops, and they're the ones that will sign up people like you and promote them. Good luck.

People enjoying awful literature helps sell more awful literature which gets EVEN more awful literature published and continues the cycle of absolute SHIT being put on the shelves while books with actual literary merit either don't get published or rot in limbo. God forbid someone expect a bit of intellectual stimulation from a book, or have a vested interest in quality literature.

I'm not surprised a Gorean doesn't like literary snobs though.
