JstAnotherSub -> Gonna rattle when I walk from pills... (8/6/2012 3:57:38 PM)

So, some of you may remember me being a pussy about going to get a glucose tolerance test a couple of weeks ago. Got it, and saw the doctor Friday for the results.

A1C was 6.5, 2 hours in to the test, sugar was 200. So, I am barely a diabetic. YAY!!!

The doctor I see is one of the best in the area for diabetic treatment. She also let me know that, if I continue with the weight loss, this can be something that I only take meds for temporarily. I had lost 4 more pounds in July, bringing my total to 21 pounds since the end of May.

But, she had me get the pneumonia shot, and the first of Hep B shots. She put me on a dosage of 5 mg a day of Lisinopril, which is mostly used for high bp (I don't have that thank the gawds), but it is also used to stop the kidneys from putting out proteins or something like that in diabetics.

She also put me on 500 mg daily of Metformin. I was already Prevastatin for my cholesterol, since mine has run at the border of high, and, given my lack of family history knowledge, she thought it was wise, and I gotta agree there.

So, Lisinopril, Metformin, Prevastatin, AND, since I am also half fuicking nuts, add Wellbutrin XL and Celexa daily. Multi vitamin and baby aspirin too! I am a walking fucking pharmacy.

Is anyone else on anywhere close to this amount of meds? I seriously just took 4 pills, and, while I know my doctor is an expert in her field, I just feel like I am close to having to get one of them fancy schmancy pill thingies that ya sort them all in to so you don't forget to take one.

I am hopeful that this will be temporary, I am aiming for no more than a year, to get things back to normal, but still......

Anyone? I am seriously wanting to know I aint some freak here.

Sighs. Getting old aint for wimps.

littlewonder -> RE: Gonna rattle when I walk from pills... (8/6/2012 4:09:34 PM)

right now I take celexa, wellbutrin, and nortriptyline for my depression, nexium and dicyclomine for my stomach problem and Bumetanide from my lipo to help with the swelling and I started taking Zzzquil to help me sleep at night.

Plus I have an entire box full of all kinds of meds because they were ones given to me but didn't work at all so they had to keep changing my meds. I told Master I could supply a pharmacy. lol

And yes! Getting old sucks! I never had half of these medical conditions until I hate 40 in January. UGH. I want my old self back! [:(]

I guess I should be happy that I made it to 50 before I started falling apart huh? lol

The main thing I worry about is the bp med. Since my bp is fine, I don't want it to go too low. I hope I don't get all dopey and shit, especially the week before the kids come back to school, when I really need to be at the top of my game, getting ready for the lil darlings.

After getting through chemo and surgery for breast cancer, the nurses said i would find a "new normal" for myself. Maybe you will find a "new normal" for your future.

Normal?!?!?! Egads, I don't think I have ever been normal-lol. But, I understand what you mean. I hope I do find my own version or normal soon.

That dose of Lisinopril seems appropriate just for renal function rather than hypertension. Remember, like your doctor said if you continue healthy weight loss, you may end up being to stop taking the Lisinopril and metformin. So think positive and keep going! [:)]

Uugh I hated being on met. It made me so sick. Lower your carb intake while you're starting it and the transition will be easier.
500mg is a low starter dose, don't let her increase you for two full weeks and then only go up 500 mg
at a time or it will mess with your system you'll be shitting your guts out for days.

Good luck with it. It's a hard med to take at first.

You "ain't some freak". Lots of folks our age take handfuls of pills once or twice a day and have to use a pill sorter to keep track.

Report any side effects and take your blood pressure regularly. Drug interaction is a whole science unto itself. If you have any questions, ASK A PHARMACIST! Docs diagnose; pharmacists treat. They are the experts on meds and can keep up with all the latest in ways doctors don't have time for. Their consultations are free too, and you can do it over the phone. Pass on glorified pill-counting factories like Walmart or Rite-aid; find a compounding pharmacy. These folks really know their stuff.

You're not a freak by a long shot. I take six meds a day for things like high bp, cholesterol and tryglycerides. I also take vitamin D, B12 and Calcium. My doc pushes the pneumonia and flu vaccine every year, too.

I'm losing weight so I hope to be able to D/C the bp meds.

Congratulations on your weight loss. When it comes to blood sugar and bp that's the best thing you can do. [;)]

I feel for you, my fellow pill popping "freak". I had to buy a weekly am/pm pill box just today. Man that depressed me.

Congrats on the weightloss and positive approach/goals.

Metformin is kicking my ass, gawd my stomach/side hurts so terribly. I don't have a problem with the 'shits' if anything it seems to be constipating me and I feel like my stomach is so bloated it will explode! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you and continue to wish you well and success.

Thank you all for the replies. It has started my morning great, and feeling a little bit less like a pill poppin old broad.

I hope we all get off these damn meds soon!

JstAnotherSub -> RE: Gonna rattle when I walk from pills... (8/7/2012 4:28:01 AM)

She actually said that, given my low numbers, she believes the 500 mg, once a day, will be all I need. I hope she is correct!

DesFIP -> RE: Gonna rattle when I walk from pills... (8/7/2012 7:54:26 AM)

Blood pressure, thyroid, and allergy pills in the AM. Just a statin at night.

The Man uses a weekly pill case. Metformin and a bp med which is also used to eliminate edema, allergy pills and vitamins. He takes a handful in the morning and just the second Metformin in the afternoon.

Great A1C number, btw. Keep losing weight and you'll be below the threshold in no time. I was borderline when he was diagnosed and after making dietary changes for him, my fasting blood sugar was 109 last time. But I am so sick of sweet potatoes instead of white, you cannot imagine.

I suffer from IBS and when it flares up I can take 4 Colace daily. Getting old is hell but remember, it's better than the alternative.

kalikshama -> RE: Gonna rattle when I walk from pills... (8/7/2012 10:24:38 AM)

I have one daily Rx, one Rx that I take between ovulation and starting my period, and I take a bunch of supplements.

I use one of these:

If I continue to have a hard time remembering the pills I need to take with food, I'll consider a bigger pill organizer. I'm fine with the empty stomach ones, which I take with my AM tea, and the nighttime ones.

If your numbers are THAT low, you should be able to skip the met and control your sugars with diet alone. Just watch your refined carb intake (no soda, easy on the white breads, pastas and rice etc and NO FUCKING DONUTS <cry>)

500mg of met is a starter dose and if she plans to keep you at that level and you're taking it solely for blood sugar purposes, I would seriously consider skipping it and just watching diet. No sense in adding yet another medication if you can get where you need to without. Your body has a chance of getting "lazy" and dependant on the meds to do the work for it making them a permanent addition. If you can slightly adjust your food intake and retrain it to do what it's supposed to without meds (until later in life) then you're ahead of the game.

See if she will agree to you doing that for a few weeks while regularly checking your blood sugars before you start the metiformin.
