ok...it's simulated outerspace eye-candy.....but it's really cool!! What if the earth had rings like Saturn? Check it out!!

Aw man! I was expecting something like "Slave Girls from Planet Lustalon."

But that was pretty cool.

If Earth did have a ring system, I wonder how that would have affected human science (fewer stars visible) and our religious development... eg: "when you die will your soul be pure enough to rise up and travel the Great Sky Road to the afterlife?"

Marc I was thinking the same thing, well almost..not the soul passing and stuff, more like: how would it affect the weather? Would the moon be affected?

Depends what its mass was, a set of
rings probably would have a very
minimal/ barely noticeable, constant
equatorial high tide like effect.

But I'm quite sure we would have to
trade away our moon as part of the
deal, the size and closeness of our
moon would most likley tear the rings
to shreds, there would be strong
angular tidal stresses.

The Moon differs from most satellites of other planets in that its orbit is close to the plane of the ecliptic, and not to the Earth's equatorial plane. The lunar orbit plane is inclined to the ecliptic by about 5.1°, whereas the Moon's spin axis is inclined by only 1.5°.

But it would certainly look amazing.
