This is called Ebru coating. It's also used in modern production to apply patterned decals to irregular surfaces. Ladies, it also works with painting nails.

That's a variation on the toll painting used to make those fantastic wavy patterns found in hardbound book inside covers years ago. You put various colors on a water surface and carefully stir them with a small stick. The results are rare and beautiful. Shame we rarely see it any more.

I forgot to mention that once you stir the patterns, carefully lay a sheet of paper over the water, and the ink will transfer as a print. One of a kind, and truly esoteric art.
