It's actually not just frowned upon but most have flat out said "Please check the date of a thread and avoid commenting on anything more than 3 months old. If you would like to start a discussion based on a thread more than 3 months old, create a new post and include a link to the old thread."
Which can be found HERE so doing things your way is all fine and good but you are still expected to follow the forum guidelines like everyone else.
