BamaD -> RE: New York Shootings (8/29/2012 4:13:39 PM)

A gun, knife, club or whatever is not responsible for the use to which it is put so there is no contridiction.

BamaD -> RE: New York Shootings (8/29/2012 4:17:14 PM)

Your aegument is only valid if you think that a person being killed with a gun is somehow worse than them being killed with a knife. Not a red herring if as in D C the number of gun related murders went down slightly but it was now safe for the crimminals to use knives.

BamaD -> RE: New York Shootings (8/29/2012 4:20:34 PM)

Because they are a less violent people, I am afraid I must agree.

Dont be so stupid, the thread is about shootings so my post is valid enough. You are the one introducing "other crimes" and "knives" into the argument.

Yes, your red herrings, my figures are not about murders but murders by shooting. Your problem is that as soon as you realise the facts dont meet with your post, you change the criteria.

Of course gun controls work, why else does the USA have a gun/murder rate 40 times higher than the UK ?

Not because of gun control, but because they are more civilized.

Bullshit. There are plenty of uncivillised people in the UK and civillised people in the US.

BamaD -> RE: New York Shootings (8/29/2012 5:08:27 PM)

Actually thisthread is about the shooting in NY not about gun control. Don't you be dogmatic if stopping one shooting leads to 5 knifings then gun control doesn't work. When you demonstrated that you didn't understand it you switch to omg guns are evil and force people to do bad things.

Well knock yourself out proving the official figures wrong. I will content myself with sticking to posting facts.

I did not say your figures were wrong just that they only paint a small piece of the picture. You look at figures in a different society I look at the over all figures within this society. If a city became the most dangerous place in this country once guns were banned there then the gun ban didn't work. What happens in the UK is not relevant to this society. If you feel that a muder is a murder compare US violence with other weapons to comparable rates in the UK you will see that it is in line.

Say what now? Less violent people? Are you saying genetics is the thing?

No I am saying that culture is the thing. The US was founded by independent people with limited respect for authority. There is a streak of that throughout our culture this has a plus side but it has a minus side as well.

I've read most of the posts in this thread. I have a question for the OP. Have you ever had your life threatened with a weapon? Up close and personal? If you have, please share the experience so those of us who also have had that experience can contrast and compare.

Yes I have been threatened with a weapon, a sawn off shot gun in a bar no less. No point sharing details with you though since neither of us have anyway of verifying the others claims. Most of the Right on here lay claim to having been cops, bounty hunters, navy seals and rambo, odd how that goes huh.

Still, at least you didnt use the usual bullshit I get on here which is always a version of "Whats it to you, you are not an American"

My question is valid if you look at this from Wiki, not a great source but still valid. Read the bolded part.

Tasers were introduced as non-lethal weapons to be used by police to subdue fleeing, belligerent, or potentially dangerous people, who would have otherwise been subjected to more lethal weapons such as a firearm.

Thanks for replying to my question and for turning out to be sane! It's rare to read a reply on a heated topic and have some temperment. I was also threatened once...with a double-edged short sword long enough to pass right through my chest and come out my back. I was working at a hotel in Montana (graveyard shift) and was robbed. This happened 3 weeks after Gary Gilmore made the national news. They were a couple of guys in their twenties from the Crow nation. They had me against a wall with the sword pressed into my chest. I can tell you I never felt more alive than I did during that robbery.

They got $200 (and 15 years with no parole in prison for armed robbery since this was a repeat offense).

I think even if the taser is effective it would have required some lucky circumstances with the incident in question. The cops would have had to sneak up on the guy and hit him before he had time to react. As it was, it looks like they said something to him and he turned, immediately pulled the gun and pointed it at them. In hindsight it appears he wanted or expected to die.

Who kows what you mean by small picture. The figures are about murder by shooting, the thread is about shootings, yet you want to change it to overall because the facts dont suit.

BamaD -> RE: New York Shootings (8/30/2012 1:05:44 PM)

You want to keep it as narrow as possible because it allows you to leave out those things which disprove your view.

Silentrunner26 -> RE: New York Shootings (8/30/2012 2:48:28 PM)

I have been around guns and cops all my life . My uncle was a 30 cop and we saw the good and bad side of Houston PD . It is nothing like tv and never will be . Chicago had a night where 5 officers shot 37 times and hit 3 times on 2 guys . Problem is the 2 guys had 16 shells in 2 semi autos and hit the cops 5 times while they where behind their cars . Sometimes it is more luck than being able to hit a moving target while taking fire . Day light in the middle of a side walk but with people all around and a guy shooting back while dogging bullets . Let me be honest someone come in my house in the middle of the night I open up both barrels on the 12 gauge and clean the mess up later . Easier to putty a wall and replace a door than talk someone out of hurting my family . NYPD needs to pay for the hospital bills thank God everyone lived and move on .

Yeah, I want to keep a thread on gun shootings about gun shootings...silly me huh.

your understanding about crime is equal to your understanding of tactics.

BamaD -> RE: New York Shootings (8/30/2012 5:23:30 PM)

by your critera if we discussed a program to end the cyote problem by introducing wolf to the area it would be a distraction to mention the problems caused by the wolfs.

Again, and believe me it`s getting tedious repeating myself, the thread isnt about crime, or knives, it`s about Shootings.

The clue is in the thread title, I know that because I wrote it myself.
