SiegFaust -> Branding (9/1/2012 2:12:34 PM)

I had a talk with one of my old subs the other day, and she had brought up that her Dom was planning on branding her, in the literal sense. They are set to be married and he insists on doing it, and who am I to say anything. She came to me about advice on precautions and anything that can speed up the recovery.

In this area I find myself without experience, So I bring this request to you guys. Beside general burn first aid, does anyone have any advice on branding, or any experience with this (giving/receiving)?

BambiBoi -> RE: Branding (9/1/2012 3:07:36 PM)

Branding is (ideally) a controlled third degree burn. If either of them need help from a website, they shouldn't do it. I really cannot stress that point enough. Who are you to be saying anything? The sub asked you for advice. She's opened the door for your concerns, judgment, and advice.

Objectively, thin lines heal faster than blotches. So a solid heart shape will heal far slower than a heart outline. Research burn recovery, because the skin doesn't care if its a chunk of lava or a heated cattle marker.

LadyPact -> RE: Branding (9/1/2012 3:09:35 PM)

What kind of brand are they going to do? Is it going to be a hot strike brand, a temp water brand, or one done with the violet wand?

Thanks for the advice. I believe he was just going to put his cattle ranches brand. (im hoping a different iron at least though)

SiegFaust -> RE: Branding (9/1/2012 3:20:09 PM)

a hot iron one.

cloudboy -> RE: Branding (9/1/2012 5:22:43 PM)

Here's my advice on branding. Until you've been in a good relationship with someone for ten years, don't let him brand you. PERIOD. Getting Married doesn't mean shit until you have a track record to go with it.

If you are under 35 years old, and you have not been in a relationship with guy for at least 10 years, don't let him brand you.

No branding for anyone 30 years of age or younger, period.

I don't care if the guy is "the Dominant," he should have to work for it and prove himself in the relationship.

It would help to know the rationale behind the branding. How do we know this guy isn't a clown or an idiot?

Where is the brand intended to go and how big is it? That strikes me a relevant too.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Branding (9/1/2012 5:27:04 PM)

A hot iron one? Is she bonkers, or messing with you?

Branding takes skill. Designing brands takes skill. I love the whole 'marked for life' concept, but a badly done brand cannot be fixed.

Its a very romantic notion -- but the experienced part of me would think it a bad idea in 99.7% of all cases. To wit, I am Mr. Uber Dom. I make my own paddles and bondage furniture, stand 6'3", keep my word, inspire confidence, and send my woman to the moon and back regularly. We marry in Key West. Her family loves me, all in the world is great, and I brand her -- an act that bonds us even closer together.

Two years after that, back in Key West, I die from a shark attack suffered on a snorkeling trip. I'm 28. She's 26.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Branding (9/1/2012 5:46:46 PM)

My only big(ish) tattoo is a memorial. I would certainly want one in that case!

However, I love body mods, and have grown up with big, visible scars. You either have that 'it's your body, play with it' mindset, or you don't.

I will say again, a bad brand is BAD. Ugly bad.

SiegFaust -> RE: Branding (9/1/2012 6:01:04 PM)

They have the religious mentality that once you marry, even if you separate or become a widow that you are still bound to that person through which ever supreme being they believe in, in essence a mate for life. I dont think its a good idea at all, and have voiced my opinions but they are going to go through with it regardless, so the least I can do as her friend is offer advice and not criticism.
As for the size and location of the brand, they were thinking silver dollar size, but havent decided a location. Shes convinced him to wait till they do some research on where the prime place for a burn on the body to heal well.

The Dom believes his 10 years of cattle branding will be sufficient but I have my doubts. I would much rather them go for ink but that can be removed and they want permanent.

I'm kind of conservative in that regard. Your advice definitely stands, if you do it, do it right.

DesFIP -> RE: Branding (9/1/2012 6:07:23 PM)

Does she have really good health insurance? Because cattle brands are not designed to be used on people. She will get a third degree burn and require medical care.

How does he propose not to be arrested when she's in the ER and tells them that he took a cattle branding iron to her?

Post #4 addresses your question as to the branding instrument. And as far as medical expenses, she is more that financially able to pay for health care....really well off. As far as law enforcement, well lets say arrangements were made and not to be discussed.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Branding (9/1/2012 6:18:32 PM)

You can't fix stupid. I'm sorry for your friend, but it's her foolish decision.

Why do you think I dropped her and moved to a new area?
[:D]

LadyPact -> RE: Branding (9/1/2012 6:47:38 PM)

I don't mean any offense. Have they considered a temp brand first.

Doing a brand can be a magnificent bond. It doesn't have to be the hot strike brand to feel that way. A temp brand can be a try out period.

Which, I apologize, doesn't really answer your question. There isn't really anything different in the post care for a brand than any other burn that is caused by metal. The difference is that metal sears the various layers of the skin and that is what gives the scarring effect. There are a number of topical creams on the market that include an anti-biotic. If the brand is going to be placed somewhere that your friend can reach, it may be advisable for her partner to treat the area.

ETA - For the record, I did clip's first temp brand when we had been in a dynamic around two years.

SiegFaust -> RE: Branding (9/1/2012 7:05:37 PM)

Its a forum, and it would be childish to take offense here. Ill pass the temp idea to them. They might feel that it suites their needs.

Why isn't she asking her own Dom these questions instead of you??? That would confuse the hell out of me.

SiegFaust -> RE: Branding (9/1/2012 8:03:28 PM)

I remained close friends with her after we ended our fun and games together, and her Dom is a friend of mind. She has concerns but has faith in her Dom. She is worried that if he senses that she has some kind of doubt about this, that he will put on a false sense of bravado and do the brand hastily. So she comes to a person she knows has doctored her cuts and bruises and thinks things through.

Yes I know, if they plan on being married and her branded then she really shouldn't have doubts.

SpaceSpank -> RE: Branding (9/1/2012 8:05:50 PM)

Why? You're allowed to have doubts when married. It doesn't instantly make every choice good.

She should feel free to discuss concerns with him, especially if he things all his experience branding cattle is directly transferable to branding a person.
