We have a friend that is an ex-seal. He feels this book was massively inappropriate.

So do I. The other Seals haven't profited
from the experience. It's important to
remember it's only his take on things.
He say's it isn't poltically motivated but
the timing of the release makes that
very questionable. But mostly I think
the whole thing lacks dignity and he
is cheapening himself and his service
for monetary gain. My stepdad is retired
military and is very critical about the
guy choosing to do this.

He doesn't have an issue with the subject or even making money from it. Our friends big contention is that he didn't follow chain of command or procedure, which basically violates their code of ethics. He said it lacks honor.

Did you watch the 60 minutes story...If you did you would know that most of the profits from this book are going to military support charities.

I found the interview and story completely non-political and even though I don’t think he should have published his book without the proper authority I am glad he did it.

He says, don’t know if it is true, that the other seals in the operation are not upset with him releasing his story. He further says he is not giving away secret tactics, equipment, and names just his story as he saw it.

Although his story differs from the official accounts it is not so different as to imply cover-ups in any way. It is just a point of view by a participant who may not be privy to all the information and strategy available.

Personally I am proud of this man and his courage along with his cohorts on this difficult mission.

To me the most telling information he released was that this was NOT a kill mission even if it did turn out that way. This revelation is a relief and affirms my belief in that the basic notion of justice, as apposed to retribution, is paramount in our leaders and armed forces.

I dont think that he is cheapening himself ..
I mean if you have a story that would make a book & that book would make you a very very rich man...

that is cheap?... its an invesment.. in my mind...

plus: if the US say that they killed binladen ... why is this guy stiped from his freedom of speach? i think he waited a year.
+plus he actually annaouced before the book was for sale..

I dont think that word worth its space in the line anymore.. not here.. not on the moon..

I think if the book... (the story) was ... movie or a documantry from National Geographic on the same matter.. i dont think that it would be an issue.
the National Geographic have a very larg number of (classified operations) veiwed on TV ... one of them was about the (Iran hostage`s in the 70) & how the us made that operations in details.... the funny thing was ... the show itself was translated to persian!!

There are specific protocols for writing this type of book. Period. He did not follow that protocol. Period.

Next, I think you're forgetting that when you join the military, you voluntarily give up the right to free speech. You agree to a code of conduct when you sign on the dotted line and that includes what you can say in published form.

This is my stepdad's primary issue with it as well.
And he would have preferred it to be a
group effort with other points of view.

I'm glad money is going to mitary charities
but not all of it is and I still find it basically
a distasteful thing to do. Any of the other
Seals could have done what he's chosen to
do but refrained.

since he left navy = (military) now he is an x-navy.. which that code of conduct or even that protocol. Period would not apply to his case.

Yeah, actually it does, because that agreement covers his time in the SEALS, which is what he wrote about. High level military/FBI/CIA have to sign a disclosure that says "If you write a book, you have to let us see it first". Just because he's out of the Navy does mean that that agreement goes away.

Just saw an interview with Panetta who condemned
the book. He thinks a book like this that
reveals sensitive information puts future
operations and mitary at risk. He thinks
the guy has put himself and other members
of the team in jeopardy for writing the
book. There's some speculation the guy
could be prosecuted for writing the book.

Panetta also made the case for not ignoring
protocol. Namely, it has the potential to put
lives at risk and can be a security threat.
When you're asking men and women to risk
their lives in operations such as this the
promise of the cloak of privacy is
important.

I would think something this big would have already been under heavy observation already, before published. I could be wrong.
Also I thought the same thing that OSide said, as far as the writing about or speaking about things that go down over seas pertaining to gov. issues.

I don't know at what point his superiors,
the Pentagon, etc got wind of the book.
But they're condemning it now and the
talk about prosecuting is to set an
example for others who are tempted
to ignore protocol.
The security of future missions and
putting other service peoples lives at
risk are the biggest concerns surrounding
the book and any future books a service
member might write about another mission.

My understanding is that it was already being printed when the authorities found out. The manuscript was never submitted for vetting prior to publishing, which is what part of the big stink is about.

That's very true. They catch me on that all the time. Even our retired Marines say that.

Don't know if this guy's story is true or not, but the thing I found hilarious was....60 minutes statement "we have kept this mans name secret to protect his anonymity"....and then proceeded to show his face, full body, everything, in full Technicolor
