You know, nevermind. I am just pissed about the bigotry in that topic. Sorry Steven for the derail.

FMRFGOPGAL -> RE: A civil rights pioneer. (9/8/2012 6:58:30 PM)

When was the first civil litigation over a transgendered person's rights brought?

Well it's kind of an appropriate topic since they weren't represented or really known at the time. That's what's neat abput this country. It's a work in progress that you can't drag backwards and prevail (not for long anyway).

Star Trek!

Star Trek was pseudo-science fun but politically/socially/economically it was horseshit. It avoided the actual questions in favor of a small communal band traipsing about the galaxy under the guiding hand of Imperial Leader Kirk as being representative. It existed by assumption.

Ster Trek was a short bus answer for progressive ideals.

"For the first time, we are being seen the world over as we should be seen"

Translation - We've polished the turd.

SpaceSpank -> RE: A civil rights pioneer. (9/8/2012 11:23:18 PM)

That's a bit of an obtuse view of it. Star Trek was an idea for a pseudo perfect "future state" society. I needed to be for the more optimistic atmosphere the show was going for. Very few of the problems presented were intrinsic to the state of Humanity and Earth as it stood in the series.
Obviously they didn't have the answers to how utopia was achieved, if they did we would be a bit closer to it already.

Instead it used that ideal situation to externalize many very human issues and problems. It made subtle, and not so subtle comments about society, while still being a fun space romp.

For MLK, who you quoted there, it was indeed the world as he wished it be seen... a multiracial crew all serving as relative equals towards the same goals. It was certainly dated, and imperfect, but it was also something that had never really been shown on TV before. It televised much of what he was struggling for, what he was fighting to make happen, in an easy to watch show anyone could enjoy.

For its time, it was as "perfect a view" as was possible to make it to a pilot, let alone a full series.

I have always enjoy many of your post and so on, but you have missedi it here!

So many people both of different races were murder or lynched to bring about the changes
that were so important mile stones in this country!

It may had been many years ago but it is fresh in the minds of many of elderly people who still have
pain of losing a loved one during those time!!!

So please take it as seriously as they did and respect those whom hace passed on!

mons, there are different ways to push a cause. You can demonstrate, you can bring suit (e.g., Brown vs Board of Education), etc. And then there's television.

Star Trek looks campy today, but at the time it was a television breakthrough in having people (and aliens) of different ethnicities working together as a team. Jack Benny introduced us to a black man who cracked jokes at the expense of his white employer, I Spy showed us a black man who was not a servant, The Cosby Show showed an upper middle class black family simply dealing with life's issues as a family. Each one pushed the barriers just a bit, especially in the days before the Internet, when television was bigger than it is now.

Add to your list . . . All In The Family (early 70s) and The Jeffersons (later 70s)

Ya know, I do not recall ST:OS dealing with that issue, I do KNOW that ST:TNG dealt with it in one of their episodes. "The Outcast."
