For those who are needle-phobic.....the mist is an option unless you have certain contraindications....
I do not have any first-hand experience administering with the subcutaneous needle (the one advertised as 90% smaller)--It's for those over 18 yo. Unfortunately can't give it to kids.

JAS: obviously, it's a voluntary decision for you and your family members. Flu can be deadly to those with medical conditions and the elderly--getting a flu shot protects you and those you care about. 1-2 days of malaise are nothing compared to 1-3 weeks of illness--or worse if it leads to complications.

The strains selected are not "willy nilly" and as Angelika pointed out, they usually do an effective job. Influenza is a very challenging virus and sometimes mother nature outsmarts and outplays science.

But should you choose to opt out, practice good handwashing, cover your cough/sneeze, avoid those who are sick or who have recently been ill and let's hope we all stay healthy this flu season.

I'm glad I got the shot. If it keeps Master from getting sick because he's around me with the flu, then I do it. The last thing he needs is to get sick and then have to miss work and worry about me at the same time. Plus I always worry about getting strangers sick when I go somewhere. I think that's because my dad COPD and he caught pneumonia somehow, probably from someone during his doctor's appointments or even one of us or our kids, etc...and he died from the immuno-compromise he had. That always haunts me with getting others ill who may be in that same situation.

Our local clinics should be opening up soon. We have a very wide spread program in Alberta that determines who gets it for free. If, for example, you are a healthy male, living in a healthy household, working a construction zone, you pay. Work in health care? Free for you and family. Chronic disease in your house or very close contact. Free.

When I was still working as an RN, it was free for the whole family. Allthough I am no longer licensed, my nine year old has type I Diabetes, so we are still in the free zone. I don't think I have paid for a shot in 15 years.

my jurisdiction offers them free to anyone...no insurance, identification or residency needed. You walk into one of my clinics, we'll vaccinate you for free.

I am one of those "nutters" who doesn't want a vaccination, no way no how. It nearly broke my heart when one was forced upon me, that I might get my Vet Tech schooling and degree.

I think almost everywhere in the states you can now get a free flu shot, whether you have insurance or not. I know you can go to walmart and get them for free. I just think you have to find out the days and times.

There are lots of public clinics that will do them and I think RiteAid and CVS charge a minor fee, something like $5. So there really is no excuse not to get one.

You're not alone Dusky...there are many, many people who don't want or support getting vaccinations. I'm a bit surprised how many hospitals make it a condition of employment.

Thanks for your understanding, Haus. My stance on the subject is not particularly popular, so I often stand alone on it.

I dont get the flu shot either.. i did get them for a while when i was younger but it didnt necessarily save me from getting the flu.. my stance now on the flu shot is that i dont want to rely on a shot to do what my bodies immunity (and regular hand washing, proper hygiene, good health, etc) should do.. I am not anti all vacinations, just the flu shot for me is one that is minor..

I'm with you, Dusky. I don't tend to get flu, even when I was working around sick people all the time in the Health Center. Upper respiratory, yes...flu, no. No flu shot for me.

I used to avoid getting the flu vaccine, but in the past several years, with concerns of new strains, I started. What made the difference for me was some studies (sorry, I don't have references) showing that even if the vaccine doesn't reduce the chance of getting the flu, it reduces the chances of dying from it. Yes, it's rarely fatal, but if a new, deadlier strain appears, I'd rather have the extra protection. Getting a variety of strains in the shots each year gives me a better chance of fighting a new strain since there are usually some similarities to previous ones.

Since a major flu complication is lung infection, get the pneumococcus vaccine too, if you're older or otherwise at high risk. I think that's good for 5 years.

I'm not strongly pro-vaccine, but weighing the risks and benefits, I decided to go for the possible protection.

Getting it at places like Wal-Mart was so much easier than using the grocery store pharmacy because WM uses a separate company that submitted claims to my insurance and covered it 100%. I tried one of the grocery store pharmacies because there was a line at WM, but it was covered under prescriptions and they weren't sure my insurance would pay. I went back to WM the next day.

I've been pretty lucky, constitution-wise, in regards to not catching most of what others catch, and I tend to dabble with medicinal herbs and homeopathic remedies. I've become rather adept at nipping in the bud anything that tries to get a serious hold.

When is the best time to get a flu shot? Walmart is already offering them and the college I attend is offering walk-ins the first week of October. I don't want to get one too early and have the immunity it provides wear off too soon.

The best time to get a flu shot is ... 4 weeks ago.

The next best time: Today.

Yup I don't have flu shots either, my little body can jolly well shape up and sort itself out. I give it nice food and a nice life. Actually this morning tho I did get a bit of backchat. I told it I was taking it running, and it turned round and looked at me and muttered "sarah, do it and die." needless to say i took it out for a 5k run despite that and we won't be having any of that nonsense again, i hope..!!

You're right, fluffypet67. If a vitamin supplement prevented the flu, then nobody would ever get it.

We got our flu shots a few days ago. Years ago when the flu shots were in short supply I missed getting the shot. I did get the flu. I spent 4 days in the hospital as a result of complications. It took me 2 months to be able to walk from the livingroom to the bathroom without getting out of breath. I will never miss getting a flu shot again.

Oy - the last time i had the flu i missed five days of work and wanted to die! It isn't something i want again if the vaccine will prevent it. ....Luckily for me, i am require to have it for work - or wear a mask for the entire flu season.

and the hospital i work in is requiring patients to get a flu shot on admission - unless they object strenuously.................. Its a good idea, but a bit draconian.

and for the record , for parents that don't get their kids vaccinated - they should be required to take care of a child with whooping cough for 24 hours. Its an absolutely horrible disease, and no kid should be at risk of catching it.

Because nobody is deficient in Vitamin D?

Prevalence and correlates of vitamin D deficiency in US adults.

Department of Public Health & Social Work, Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania, Slippery Rock, PA 16057, USA. [email protected]

Abstract

Mounting evidence suggests that vitamin D deficiency could be linked to several chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease and cancer. The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and its correlates to test the hypothesis that vitamin D deficiency was common in the US population, especially in certain minority groups. The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2005 to 2006 data were analyzed for vitamin D levels in adult participants (N = 4495). Vitamin D deficiency was defined as a serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations ≤20 ng/mL (50 nmol/L). The overall prevalence rate of vitamin D deficiency was 41.6%, with the highest rate seen in blacks (82.1%), followed by Hispanics (69.2%).

Vitamin D deficiency was significantly more common among those who had no college education, were obese, with a poor health status, hypertension, low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level, or not consuming milk daily (all P < .001). Multivariate analyses showed that being from a non-white race, not college educated, obese, having low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, poor health, and no daily milk consumption were all significantly, independently associated with vitamin D deficiency (all P < .05).

In summary, vitamin D deficiency was common in the US population, especially among blacks and Hispanics. Given that vitamin D deficiency is linked to some of the important risk factors of leading causes of death in the United States, it is important that health professionals are aware of this connection and offer dietary and other intervention strategies to correct vitamin D deficiency, especially in minority groups.

I dunno...I am fairly certain I didn't have enough vitamin D prior to moving to the land of Aloha...and I never got the flu. I still have have never experienced it. *knock on wood*

As to the OP...well...it would seem the posts above mine answered the question more than adequately. :)

Please don't slam me for the link. I couldn't help myself. :D
