WASHINGTON - Women for the first time have a vaccine to protect themselves against cervical cancer. The
Food and Drug Administration on Thursday licensed the vaccine, Gardasil, for use in girls and women ages 9 to 26.

The vaccine works by preventing infection by four of the dozens of strains of the human papillomavirus, or HPV, the most prevalent sexually transmitted disease.

By age 50, some 80 percent of women have been infected.

Gardasil protects against the two types of HPV responsible for about 70 percent of cervical cancer cases. The vaccine also blocks infection by two other strains responsible for 90 percent of genital wart cases. The vaccine will be available by the end of the month, with a three-shot series costing $360.

Its manufacturer, Merck & Co. Inc., seeks similar approval elsewhere around the world. Each year, cervical cancer kills an estimated 240,000 women worldwide, including 3,700 in the United States.

One more thing, I wanted to note that statistic in the article:
"By age 50, some 80 percent of women have been infected."

Which reminds me a lot of how Herpes Simplex I, sometimes called oral herpes, has about the same prevalence in the general american population ranging from 60-90%.

So either those stats are wrong or there are LOTS of people in denial about their disease status. They don't know and they don't want to know either. And both Herpes and HPV can transmit non-sexually also - consequently I am always amused by the people that insist they can't have these things who are otherwise sexually active adults. Guess what? If you are sexually active the stats say that you and everyone you have ever fucked are more likely to have these things than to not have these things. Case closed.

You may be asymptomatic, true. But chances are that either you or the person you are fucking right now are afflicted and carriers - that's what 80% or 60-90% means...

During my marriage, after my ex-husband cheated on me, i went to a doctor to get tested for STD's, when i asked to be tested for HPV, the doctor asked me how many men i had had sex with (which at that point was one) and how many women he had had sex with (which was about 5 during the period of time that he had been unfaithful). To which she replied, then there is no point in testing you for HPV as you probably already have it. From then on, i just had to make sure i had the yearly pap test because HPV doesn't always cause cervical cancer. After 7 years of clean Pap tests, the doctor said that i can consider myself clean from HPV.

Merck is known to be one of the...less than perfect drug companies. I take anything presented by merck with a grain of salt.

I just hope this 'vaccine' won't lead women who choose to have the shots to believe they now have no need for annual paps

Technically, they all suck, none are nearly perfect I just couldn't think of the proper phrasing, the "..." was literally my brain struggling. I'll thank you not to take notice of my shortcomings elephant man

I am pretty sure that this vaccine was created by Dr Ian Frazer of Australia (Queensland),
And to my knowledge what he has done is taken the virion which is found to be attributed to cervical cancer, taken out its organelles and used the empty membrane to stimulate an immune response thereby creating a vaccine.

I am not sure if it is his vaccine, if so it has something like a 95% success rating.
But i am not sure if he ended up selling it to Merck.. so it could be something else, but it sounds the most logical.

According to UPI, Professor Ian Frazier, named 2006 Australian of the Year for his discovery, first developed a cervical cancer vaccine which, in the U.S., has been licensed by Merck as Gardasil, and could be available as early as next fall. Frazier used the technology of the cancer vaccine to develop the genital warts vaccine, which he says uses “virus-like particles to deliver an antigen for genital warts." http://genitalwarts101.org/

I really thought more women would be excited by the possibility of avoiding death by cervical cancer, but I guess antipathy for Merck runs higher than that. I am no lover of Big Pharma myself, but at university the figure appeared to be 50-60% of anonymous pap smears were testing positive for genital warts - and that's women of university years in the main, 18-22.

This vaccine seems like really good news to me. But then, I am not a woman.

I am very excited about the new vaccine. I am wondering if it will do anything to prevent cancer in those already infected with HPV.

FDA's approval was almost universally hailed, but the vaccine could yet become controversial. Vaccines are always most effective when there is a "herd immunity," when enough people are immunized that the pathogen gradually disappears.

Which means that - yet again - we have religious nut-cases preventing that which makes the most sense. You don't need a vaccine against HPV if you protect yourself by practicing abstinence, right?

That is because the body fights off the infection even a carrier is not a carrier for life in 90% of women (only women are generally quoted because you cant test men) the virus is gone in 2 years. http://www.collarchat.com/m_1598800/tm.htm
